76 Cyclone help!!!!!
Here is the issue. When trying to start the sled I get fuel running out of the exhaust manifold.
Here is what I have done. Cleaned the gas tank out. Cleaned the carb completely. Replaced the needle and seat in carb. Replaced all fuel lines, fuel filter and fuel pump. Put new plugs in.
If i pull the impluse line off the pump and pull the plugs and roll engine over to get rid of the fuel in the crank case, then hook everything back up it will start and run. At this point I can ride it, if I shut it off and come back out 30 minutes later, it might start up after about 10 to 15 pulls, if it doesnt start at that point it will start running fuel out of the exhaust manifold. Then I have to pull the impluse line off and take plugs out and roll the engine over to clear out fuel. Hook all back up and it may or may not start. I can usually tell of it will not start because after about 3 to 4 pulls the gas will come running out of exhaust manifold.
I am not sure what else to do. I cannot figure out where all the gas is coming from.
I even turn the in line fuel valve off and tried to start the sled with what was in the line and carb and all I got was gas running out of exhaust manifold.
I have check spark with plugs lying on engine and spark is there.
I have check compression. 148psi on both sides.
Not sure what to do.

76 Cyclone help!!!!!
Sounds like your needle and seat are sticking or your floats are set up right. If fuel keeps flowing, the needle is not seating in the carb.
If you remove the float bowl, and then hold the carb upside down, the float arm should be sitting perfectly level.Any adj. that needs to be done if any, should be made by bending the tab on the float arm that controls the needle.

I have the same issue with my cyclone. I know that my needle and seat are new and adjusted per the manuals instructions. I had read in my manual that the fuel shut off valve should be turned off when trailering the sled due to the fact that it could cause a flooded engine. Now the location that I store my sled is not exactly level from side to side and I also prop up the rear of the sled so that the track does not freeze to the ground. I may be wrong in assuming that this flooding is unavoidable at the angle that the sled and carburetor sits. Especially with a full tank of gas. so for me it is just a fact of life to remember to shut the fuel off.
You may also want to try a float needle with the special tip (can't remember what it's called, but it looks like a rubber tip on the needle).

Ok, tonight I pulled carb off took plugs out and impluse line off. Cleared all gas in crankcase. Took carb apart and made sure it was clean. Pulled needle and seat and made surre it was cleaned. Put carb back together and installed on engine. Turn engine on and inline fuel valve on, flipped the choke up and pulled about 22 times. Nothing but gas running out of exhaust. Not sure what is wrong at this point.

I would be interested in knowing if you had real spark when the plugs were installed. This is tested with an in-line spark tester. Do you still have the original Prestolite cdi box installed.

Todd could be on to something. You tend to pull the recoil over faster without the plugs installed, firing them on the high speed windings. Look up the cdi diagnostics in the FAQ section and ohm out the stator.

Yes it has the origianl prestolite cdi box.
So what does this mean. Is the cdi box bad?
I am just trying to understand, when its running it runs fine. How could a bad cdi box cause gas to come out of the exhaust.

76 Cyclone help!!!!!
There are 2 ignition windings in the stator, 1 low speed, 1 high speed. When the low speed windings start to fail, the engine is hard to start if at all. If you do get it to start, they usually only stay running above 3,000 rpm on the high speed windings.
When you check for spark with the plugs out on the head, you can spin the engine over fast enough to get a spark.
If you do manage to start the engine, a weak stator will fail once it gets warmed up / hot.
When you continue to try and start a engine with a failed ignition system, the un-burnt gas ends up in the exhaust pipe.
The original 76 Prestolite cdi boxes have a history of intermitent failure as well as stator failures.

The stator windings are very easy to test with an ohm meter.
If it passes the tests than try swaping out the cdi with a know good one.

Jason, this is a really stupid question, but did you install the red fiber washer(s) when you installed the needle and seat?

O.k. Here is what I did tonight. I did the stator ohm meter test.
Low Speed Coil = .82
High Speed Coil = 71.4
Trigger Coils 29.4 and 30.2
Lighting Coil .2
According to the diagram from cdibox.com it looks like the low speed coil is bad.
