I have some more questions
1 The manual posted says 95 octane
:eek: . I run premium in my sleds but not 95. I don't think you can get 95 at the pup anymore, 91 should be alright?
2 20:1 oil ratio? I was thinking 40 or 50:1, I put 32:1 i it to play it safe before
3 There is several different plugs in the first one I a working on. N-3 (original?) NGK B9EV ad BR9ES. I prefer to run Champion plugs when I can, is RN3C the correct replacement for the N-3?
4 I tried to remove the belt when I took it out of storage so it would be easier to drag. I pulled the secondary apart the same as any other sled but the belt was to tight to remove. The manual had pics of the belt still on with the secondary pulled apart(figure 4-4). Is it necessary to take the secondary apart to remove a belt?
Webman, I didn't see any thing in the manual about a Para-Ride suspension. Can you tell me more? I a a little out of my comfort zone with these sleds. The one thing I a certain of is that these are definitely not a Deere. I will have to compare the two but I think I have a track in the parts pile from a shady deal last winter that yielded me a nos scorpion something track and a massey something track instead of 2 600 tracks . I guess everything happens for a reason.
I have a week or so without class so I will have the time to do this. I think there will be a few more questions before I am done.

Scott, octane ratings have changed since the 70's. 91/92 is fine.
Oil has changed also. 40:1 is fine.
Cuyuna twins use 9's or the equivilent plug or your choice.
You probably have too short of belt on the sled now. Someone must have shoe horned it on there.
Two suspensions were used, para-rail (modified boogy) and para-slide, not ride.
The rail used a closed track like your 600 and the slide has windows like your liquifire.

Premium is fine. Make sure you don't go any lower. The ethanol that is in the low and mid grades is not good on these old sleds.
40:1-50:1 will be fine. The recommendations were made when the old and gas were not so good.
Not sure on the spark plug. I have a BR8ES, but depends on how hot you need the plug.
You do not have to remove anything to get the belt off. It was snug for me also. There is a copy of the owners manual on the site that might help.

Thanks, I do have a para-rail in the sleds. I was thinking 20:1 sounded little rich but I guess things have changed a lot in the last few years, I still run 20:1 in the old cruisers but those motors are a special exception.

Scott, that's a really nice pair of Whirlwinds you found. I had one a couple years ago....but for some inane reason, I ended up selling it. I have regretted doing so since as it was a really sweet vintage sled to ride. Congrats on the find!

Curious as to what the compression ratio is on the antique Snow Crusiers. Never worked on one.

I can't say for sure but all 3 of my 1970's have a compression release valve on the jugs so that you can start them. the 68 doesn't and I am not sure about the 66 as it is still sitting back in the bush. They are almost impossible to start with out the compression release.
There are times I wonder why I bother with the old OMC's (mostly after I move them somewhere). But even the ugly ducklings need a home The stupid thing is they are real hard to pin years on as they had different body styles and hoods and changed the numbers every year. But there is a few old guys I know that collect them, so I do have some help with them.

Yeah it's great the have something that no one else has until it breaks. Then you are in your own and parts are hard to find. I would love to find one of the rotary powered OMC/Johnson/Evinrude.

Next set of Problems/ Questions?
I am trying to get some things sourced before I start into the suspension.
1) I have not looked at it yet but, dose anyone know a source for a rear shock for the whirlwind? I have checked Kimpex/ Dennis kirk/ Mfg supply and know one has one listed. If I pull it off and it is beyond use ca anyone recommend a good shop in Manitoba to take it too for a cross reference.
2) I did not see a mention of the plastic sliders i this suspension setup. Is there sliders or what does the track run on?
I can pick up the bearings I need locally so I figure the only problem right now is the rear shock and hoping the track I have is correct.

The slides are unique to MF/Scorp. Central part # 82-1
You can cross the shock over to early 70's Cat if I remember correctly.

Well, checked my spare "whirlwind" track, not even close . 2" too wide and different spacing. So I decided I am going to take the good motor and put it in Whirlwind #2 as it is in better shape anyways.
Next question, I was talking to a friend and he has and old scorpion that I can have if the track fits. I went and checked on it today, it is a 74 model I think stinger. The track looked OK but a little bit different than mine. The pitch looked the same but my track has small guides? in between the triangles and this track didn't. It was -28 and a little to cold to break out the tape measure.
Does anyone know if the track off a 74 stinger? will work on a 76 Whirlwind?
Can anyone identify this track size MF 17.5 x 118 x 2.52 with around 9.5" centre to centre drives?
