440/5 mystery engine

Post by redneckchicken »

So i finally got my rebuilt stator put back into my 440/5 engine on saturday. I got everything put back together and thankfully i had spark on both cylinders. But then when i went out tonight I lost spark on #2. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas for me. I have beat my head against the wall on this one.

I think we are talking about a points ignition engine here right? Exactly what was done to the stator? Filed points? New condensors? Have you checked the ground wires for the external coils? Sorry if these were already covered.

I had the same thing happen on a KEC-340. I had pulled the stator plate and replaced the points and condensors. When I reinstalled the stator plate I didn't get one of the coil lead wires routed correctly and after a few hours riding it shorted out resulting in no spark on one cylinder. Try switching the coil leads and spark plugs. If both coils have spark, I'd take a look at the stator plate again. There isn't much room in there and the wires have to be perfectly placed. If you find a short or pinched wire you may want to add some extra heat shrink in those tight rub areas. You might also check to make sure the screw for the point gap adjustment didn't slip and now one set of points isn't opening.

Good Luck!

I had just replaced the points and both ignition coils. I will tear into it again and check out what we are looking at and see if i see anything.

You may even want to file the new points to make sure the surfaces are clean.
