X8 just wont stay running

My 73 X8 has new plugs, fuel ine, gas, and carb kit. I still cant keep it running. I'm pretty sure I put the kit in right I have a book. Was missing the 3 carb springs, but got those in. I spray gas into the carb and it will start, but once that runs out it dies. I try choking it and reving it up, but still nothing. Any ideas?

Is fuel being sucked out of the tank to the carb?

I'm pretty sure gas is being sucked out. I also think it is all just going right out the return line.

If this is the case, something in the carb is not installed correctly.

One thing that has come up a couple of times here lately, is the metering lever adjustment.

This corresponds to setting the float on a bowl type carb. If it is out of adjustment, it won't allow fuel to flow, which kinda sounds like your problem.

OK I tore my carb apart and I have the metering lever screw tight and the metering lever is resting on the circuit plate. So I turned the throttle assembly and the metering lever didnt move. I lossened the metering lever screw and the metering lever raised up, so I turned the throttle again and nothing moved. Is that right? I have the metering lever pin, spring, and screw in. I'm thinking maybe the screw has to be loose? But nothing still moves. Its supposed to move, right? I'm kind of new to these type of carbs.

Turning the throttle won't have anything to do with the metering lever. The metering screw should be tight. The arm/needle need to be able to move freely. Make sure that nothing is sticking when you tap the arm to move the needle in/out.

one VERY common mistake with walbro carbs is the gaskets and reed valve under the tiny circuit plate. there is TWO gaskets and one reed valve under plate if the small hole in plate is not lined up correctly with gaskets and valve your engine wont run.

limit stated the usual setting of needle valve.. missing the other one..sorta.

there is the clearance of arm to diaghram measured against body.

then there is the clearance of arm to circuit plate.

both of these need to be set correctly for proper operation. And NO i dont remember what they both are. its been a long time since i set one up and i know its not in regular instructions either.

I remembered Rodimus making this last post, so I went back through and found it.

I just recently rebuilt a Walbro, so this is fresh in my mind. I used a Genuine Full Walbro kit. The exploded view of the carb, in the service manual, shows only 1 thick gasket, and 1 diaphram, under the circuit plate, that is what was in the kit.
A couple of pages later, there is a close up of the circuit plate assembly, and it shows a thin gasket in addition to the other 2.

And no where do I find any futher adjustments to the metering lever, other than the height adjustment.

The full kit was supposed to include the big fuel intake screen, but none was included, so I had to re-use the old one.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I've rebuilt several full walbro kits, one was real old and one was brand new aftermarket. The newer one seemed to be missing some of the listed parts and i believe that there was a difference between the kits with the gaskets under the plate, but as long as it has the thin one i think its good. I also think that the height adjustment is all you can do to the metering lever.
