JD 600 Windshield

Post by wycrumb »

I am wondering where the best place is to get a new windshield for a 600? Someone put a "sno-stuff" windsheild on it that was not right. I would like one that is close to original.
Thanks,
Wycrumb

I might have one that I had to take when buying a pair of windshields. I'll check and get back with you. DA

I believe that would depend on the state. Indiana does not title sleds. DA

North Dakota titles sleds, but a fellow vintage sled rider on these forums helped get legislation passed in ND so that any sled older than i think 1980 can be inspected and titled to a new owner so long as it isn't stolen. Minnesota on the other hand uses DNR Cards, and registration is handled by the DNR. In Minnesota they are not very strict about registration of snowmobiles in my experience.

Its a 1973, made about 200 machines before mine. I have the same motor but someone switched the Walbro carb (which don't have the greatest reputation) for 2 mikuni carbs. It runs awesome with those on it, looks like the carbs on the 295s race sleds. The 600 is the only john deere to have an 18" wide track. Does yours have electric start? Do you need any parts? I have a 600 parts sled that I am going to tear apart here soon.

my brother bought it at a farm garage sale it has 1374 miles. He had the carb rebuilt and we fired it up last weekend. He wants to give it to me but i'm not sure i want. It's a clean sled and was running ok needs some tuning wont idle. I never had a sled or worked on one before so the question is can I get this sled up and running for little money and have a little fun.

In my opinion, if you are mechanically inclined it should be no problem, sounds like your motor is in decent shape, might need seals, and the carb might just need a little tuning. I would say check the compression, if it is over 100 and both cylinders have about the same compression the motor is in pretty good shape, if you can get it running (with new gas and filter, maybe fuel lines too if they are hard and brittle) then try squirt a little gas between the clutch and the engine block, if it revs immediately then you have a bad seal. It could be a fun sled to ride but older sleds are notorious for needing as much if not more time in the garage then actually riding them. (that is my opinion as well)

What is the date of manufacture? the 1973 models had metal tanks, I said it was a '73 because of the B after the 6000 in your model number, but now you have me second guessing myself. Do you have any pictures of it? 120 sounds good for the compression, sounds like you are on your way to being a Deere owner!

My bad, there was no mfg. date stamped on the tunnel like the newer sleds had. If I remember right in 1975 they started putting the MFG. date on them and changed the Model number from a 6000 to a J600. I am sticking with my original statement that it is a 1973 due to the 6000B and the low model number. The plastic tank was introduced in 1975. Hope this helped, good luck.
