Trailfire 440 top speed?
I got the Trailfire out for some testing today. Was re-jetting due to the missing air box. I went from a stock 230 main to a 270. It was about 12 deg F when I was testing. Top end felt pretty good. Wasn't missing or 4 stroking or bogging or anything bad that I could detect.
It topped out at 50 mph running on a graded dirt road with about 6" of snow. Should I expect any more from it?
The sled is stock with the exception of the LF rubber track and the air box being replaced with a uni-filter. Belt is new. Clutches have been aligned.

My 81 440 will just touch 70 on the speedo. That's on hardpack roads or lakes.

My 79 TF 440 was good for 55 consistently. Never any more though.

My speedo is in MPH-- but I will admit the sled seems slower than the 70 I can get on the Speedo. I have a 76 yamaha exciter 440 and a 80 Polaris TX 440 that are quite a bit faster than the trailfire. Maybe the speedo is off a little. Not a very fast sled but handles so nice.

not to get too off topic, but would any of you know the top speed of a sprintfire?
thanks

Trailfire 440 top speed?
My 2cents on both.
My 79 340 Trailfire & my 83 Sprint - neither have gone over 65MPH.
Both about 62 on a really good day (and a tailwind).
And groomed or hard pack, etc.

I am surprised at these speeds, I just drove my 600 with the dual mikuni conversion and it said I was going 65, felt like 65 to as I was just on my other sled right before that going a little over 65. Is this fast for a 600? I know my 400 would only do 55 on hardpack on a good day.

Thanks for the answers. I thought 50 mph was a bit slow. I may be jetted rich. I'm going to run it for a while and see how the plugs and piston wash looks.

Yah, it's gotta be something.
My '80 Sportfire would go about 70ish & my buddie's 440 trail would never be very far behind.
Although speeds seem to differ greatly from location to location.
Not sure if it was our dealer or what, but my brother's Liquifire would hit 90 easy while
other guys Liquids (from other dealers) would only be in the 70's??????
In my opinion if a 440 won't break 60 something is wrong.
(According to my brother, it has a lot to do with how it was broken in (first 200 miles)
I really have no idea?
Good luck!
BTW these speeds were in the 1980's, maybe wear & tear?

I'd hope a 440 TF would top out a bit better to compare with other 440 fanners of the day- I recall a Yamaha Enticer 340 of the day was a low 60 mph ride with a small guy on it.

I had mine out yesterday again --and it went 66 on the speedo--hard pack on the street. Mine has consistently gone in that 65-68 mph top speed

I saw 55mph this morning. As the day got warmer it lost top speed. It's rich. I'm going to drop to the next size main jet and see what happens.

Why would you drop down in jetting on a warm day just to go faster and lean out when you know its going to get cold again?
