I just brought it home, not running. I know very little about these engines, but willing to learn. I've been reading the topics from the past on the site, they have given me an idea.
I put some gas in the carb and it fired up for a second or two until the starter cord broke, one more issue.
It has fuel in the fuel line, the fuel pump is not attached, would thart make any differance?
The wiring seems to be in order, but all over, and I have no idea what to look for. I know I need a manaul and a repair book for a dummie.
Any help or advice to get me started would be appreciated!
Thanks,
TL

Your best bet is to pull the carb and clean it. Might not be a bad idea to rebuild it along with the fuel pump. Drain all the old gas out of the tank. You should also put new fuel lines on. Once everything is hooked up, including your fuel pump, put some fresh premix in and she should fire.

You are going to have a fuel line from the tank to the filter and into the fuel pump and then one from the pump to the carb. You need to have one from the crank case to the fuel pump centre as well to power the pump. Depending on the mikuni you have you'll want to make sure the float works in the carb.

thanks, should I consider rebuilding the motor too? Where do I find out what carb I have and fuel pump?

http://www.vintagesnow.com/index.html Try this link for the manual online and reference material. He has a pretty good site. I tried to attach the manuals last night to the messages but it didn't work so here is this for ya'. I just bought the 78 Spitfire 340 Kohler for my second JD ride. I am waiting for parts right now or I would be riding. My first JD ride was stolen this year so I am Deere hunting until i get her back.

mfgsupply.com has the fuel pump.
Look for "Mikuni, single" (it's the rectangular one).
Actually here:
mfgsupply #07-425 - Mikuni Type Single Fuel Pump
As for the carb kit, I need one too.
I haven't quite figured out how to order that one.
(I'm kinda hoping it'll show up here)

My local dealer couldn't get me a complete kit for some reason. Had to get individual parts. Never did get the right gasket for the bowl. Had to end up buying gasket material and make my own. What a pain!
