Engine Serial # identification

I have a 1973 jd600 but this engine serial # has me courious. This is what the tag says model KEC-440 nothing after 440 and the # is 5501743.

It's a first generation model KEC-440. That is the correct engine for the '73 600. The later generations were the KEC-440/5's. I'm thinking the fins on the heads were taller on the /5's. Gasket kits will interchange between these two engines. These were both piston ported engines.

Troy it right on. I also think the KEC-440/5 have 5 transfer ports in the cylinder wall, vs 3 or 4 for the older versions. I think so anyway...

thanks I believe engine is correct for model thought maybe it was switched out at one time have no history of sled

The engine serial number will not match the sled serial number in the tunnel. That may be part of the confusion.

CCW engines were used in other brands. Raider for one and there are others. The CCW engines used in the Deere sleds have second tag below serial number tag on the fan tower. It is a glued on tag. It will read something to the effect of Manufactured by Kioritz Corp. of Japan for John Deere. Even if the tag is missing but you can see where the tag was it's a pretty safe bet that you have the original engine. Of course there is always the possiblity that someone replaced the original engine with one from another 600 or 500 at one time. Either way it would be the correct engine.
