You check the thermostat? Could be sticking. Is the rad fins clogged with stuff? Water pump bad? Which model is it?

If the air is not bled out of the cooling system, it will not circulate the coolant, and thus overheat.

Thermostats easy to check. I know this works for cars. You take the thermo. out and run it if it stays cool you know the thermo. is junk.

should be able to troubleshoot easy. pull cap and check for waterflow when giving it throttle . like the others said check tstat supposed to open at approx 140 degrees . take it out let it cool if it is closed put it in water on stove and heat water to see if it opens. are there any leaks? pull seat and check heat exchangers. hope this helps. how old is the motor are crank seals leaking. is it running to lean ? check color of plugs. hope this helps good luck

DONOT remove thermostate to ck if engine will run cooler as with no thermostate in the engine the water will flow too fast & could also cause a over heat problem, you NEED somekind of restriction to slow the flow of water for proper cooling..
As mentioned above remove stat & put in pan of water on stove & with using a meat thermometer ck to see at what temp it opens..
Bob are you sure your learning anything is Diesel Mechanics School??

Yes, Like I said it might only work on cars. I have seen it done doesn't mean it's right though.
