83 Sportfire that is possessed. 130's comp on both cylinders, the other day it started up beautifully, ran great all day, started right up without much issue other than a couple times I had to feather the throttle to keep it running for a second. Ran it hard to check my jetting and both plugs are same color, no variances.
Now today I goto start it up and it's very hard to start, really really hard to the point where I gave up on it and rode another sled for a few minutes. I took the fuel pump off another sled that I know is good, put it on the JD and to check I gave it a few pulls but it's not pulling the fuel through quite as strong as the other sled. The other sled btw is a 80 Lynx with a 270FA so it's not like some honker of a sled. What would cause this?
It's just at startup, the pump won't clear the air out of the line and it starts really hard. Once started though it never bogs, pops or hesitates, runs great in fact with loads of power.

Weak impulse the problem?
I don't understand why the fuel is leaking back or down in the lines?? the ck valve in the tank should keep the fuel from going down in the line??
I would say
1st.. ck the fuel lines for cracks or a hard/brittle line & or replace
2nd.. ck the needle & seat to make sure it''s not leaking the fuel into the motor.
3rd.. check the check valve in the tank to make sure its working properly
4th.. Check the impulse line for cracks or a hard/brittle line & or replace
5th.. the fuel pump for a bad diaphragm
Hope this helps

That is really making me , all new lines, new check valve in the tank, so even if the impulse was a little weak it should never "fall back". Always possible the check valve was bad from the start. I'll check that, the pump and also the impulse fitting on the engine for buildup and see what happens.

How much fuel is in the tank? did you replace the in-tank fuel line? is there enough weight on the in-tank line that it is setting on the bottom of the tank like it should be?? Water on the bottom of the fuel tank??
1st.. Ck compression again, pull both plugs & hold throttle @ WOT position while pulling over
2nd.. remove air box & stray carb cleaner into carb if motor fires then you know for sure it's a fuel delivery problem..
3rd.. Check choke plunger for proper setting & proper opening @ full choke.
4th.. rebuild carb again you may have missed something in the starting circuit the first time

Basically the fuel system is all new/replaced. First thing I did when I got the sled was pull the tank, clean it out, all new lines and cleaned the carb, installed a new needle and seat. The pickup is sitting on the bottom, has one of those strainer/check valves on it.
Going to mess with it after Xmas. appreciate the help and I'll post up if I find anything out.
