'79 Cat El Tigre problems

Post by speedy295 »

So I have a 79 El Tigre 6000. It starts, and idles, but it won't rev up. It starts incredibly easy, but it 4 cycles at idle, and if you give it throttle it just acts like its on a rev limiter. You can hold it WOT forever, all that happens it it just fills the exhaust with fuel. I put a timing light on it, and the timing is spot on, BUT the light only flashes when it fires. Meaning it misses with the engine. I would assume that its an ignition problem. I have tried a different cdi and coil pack, neither change the problem. Does this mean the stator is shot? The trigger coil measures 3 ohms, and the spec is 2+- 10%, but I'm not sure how good my meter is. The charging coil measures within spec, can't remember it off hand. One other tidbit of information: It has done this twice before, both times, it just randomly came out of it. It had a large backfire then immediately ran correctly.
Anyone have any ideas? It has new crankseals, gaskets, pistons and rings, it also has boysen reeds.

Its not any of those. It was the stator I belive. I ended up putting a new exciter/pulser coil. However when I wired it up as it was when I took it apart, the timing was about 120* off. Switch two wires around and the timing spot on...It ran beautiful, for about 10 min. The cdi box failed now. I'm trying to convert it to points. CDI sucks.

Better make sure the magnets will clear. I have never seen this done but it may work.

Speedy how do you know that it is the CDI box that failed now?

I would still be looking at the thottle saftey system.

There are three seperate switches on the grip and only one of them can be a bearcat to diagnoise.

They can be flaky and spark will come and go and it will backfire and spit and flood and die.

Try bypassing the loop with a jumper and see what she does.

its really not needed. most modern style 2 smokes pull timing at high rpm. Basically it goes like: base timeing at idle, and it advances to about 5* more than base at about 4000 rpm, from then on it retards timing untill base timing at about redline.

all i'm doing is grinding a points cam on the hub of the factory flywheel, and hoping for the best. Worst case, is don't run, and I'm right back where I started.

Ive owned this snowmobile about 10 years, I've rode it through 2 top ends. I know alot about this snowmobile. As with pretty much all arctic cats, if you un plug the chassis harness from the engine it eliminates all possibilty of any of the saftey switches causing problems.

Iv'e found 5 cases of my exact problem on arcticchat.com noone has been able to figure out the problem.

An interesting tidbit of information I found out is that, the wiring diagram in the factory manual does not match the wireing on the factory stator.

:offtopic: I Know this isn't the way to start a NEW YEAR, But some Of the posts on the site lately have gotten WHY out of hand... :wall:
Speedy, I just notice that you've been a member since Nov 2005, BUT how is it that only in the last few months you've been on here asking so many questions about so much stuff, some so utterly ridiculous that you sound more like a young teenager than a adult?? Now all of a sudden you've gotten SO smart that Your redoing what it's taken Engineers years to figure out?? I see your interests are "snowmobiles cars motorcycles Physics" Your not related to RP are you? I for one on this site don't mind giving information to individuals who need to repair there sleds, this information has by the way taking me 45+ years & sometime a lot of trial & error and a lot of money to ingest, what I don't like to see is someone coming on here, ( yes this is still a free country at least so far & yes I have also risked my life so people like you can ask these questions) asking questions but then not listening to a thing WE say, & then still doing it YOUR OWN way?? Why do this to piss people off?? Are you bored or don't have anything else to do?? (makes me wonder if your not one of those people who sit back & create viruses for old farts computers like mine??) Or are you TRYING to show US how smart you are or to play mind games with the general population of the site?? Life's to short & I'm to old to play.... :silenced:
