kec440 I.D. for hp

Post by big danno 1970 »

I just picked up a kec440 engine and I do not know what machine it is out of(may not even be deere) so is there a way to find out what hp it has by the serial numbers? There is no numbers behind the kec440 ie/1,/4 so I assume that this is a early motor as it is a piston port engine. It also has two id tags one on each side of the fan tower. The tag on the intake side says kec440 ser#5518472 and the tag on the exhaust side says made for ccw by kioritz.
Any thoughts would be helpfull
Thanks

Is the original air box, carb or clutch still on it. These items would have a JD part number stamped on them.

The KEC440 was used in the 72 JD 500, so you have an early motor. CCW sold motors to several makes over the years, so I could be out of a Scorpion, Raider, or some other early70's sled.

Deere never used Tilly's or the "Kidney weight" type drive clutch, only Wally's or Bendix carbs, and Sally clutches until the Comets came out in 74 with kits to update the 73's.

I hope this helps,

As a guess, I think they were around 36 hp.

Its not a merc motor they were reed valve.
I did not think it was a deere motor I just thought that because deere used alot of these motors you guys might be able to help ID it for hp numbers.
Rainville I think you are probably close with the hp as the numbers I found in a book said the piston port kec440 ranged from 33 to37hp.
Still open to thoughts on this though.
Thanks to all that responded
