I replaced the chiancase on my 76 LF last yr and updated to the 77 case for the tensioner. Now i have the problem of the chain slipping under hard acceleration and braking. My question is Can I drill and tap a hole to keep the chain tight? just bring it up to the tensioner just so it can't flex. Any other ideas would be appreciated or if this could could work. The chain is good, things are aligned properly.
Thanks

Dustin,
Are the teeth worn on the gears. Did you install a new tensioner or slip in a used one with a weak spring.

everything was used so it could be a weak spring. the biggest problem is braking is very limited. it makes bad noise when hitting the brakes. under acceleration it only slips under HARD acceleration. so when you brake it pulls the tensioner down because now you have just put tension on the normally slack side of the chain. I think the bolt would cure that. it never had a problem with this chain and gears with the scissor tensioner it started when i went to the new style chain case. the tensioner broke on the trail, I could tell something was amiss but it still drove ok going home and found the broken tensioner. the chain and gears still looked fine so it reused them.

I believe it is a weak spring.

If we can get Dave "Jack Frost" to post pics of the 78 CC chain tightener up-date That I'm reproducing It uses the 80-84 Liquifire type tightener..
$50.00 Plus shipping includes the tightener, chaincase block & all bolts.. This is for the 77-78 chain cases with the single pin inside & that used the single flat spring tensioners..

a picture would be great. would be be somewhat like the 340/s tensioner? thats what gave me the idea in the first place. I did reshape my spring and now it only ratchets while braking but I don't think I can fix it just doing that.

Well I got it fixed for the time being. I had a set of 21-39 gears and chains (instead of the 24-40 that was in there.) the lower gear set uses a shorter chain and runs just a bit tighter so the same spring tensioner works fine. But that said Kenny are these kits ready yet? I still ned the higher ratio for higher speed cruising.

The kit uses the 80-84 Liquifire tightener (Roller & channel bracket) It'll only take me a day to get one made up.. Now if you have your own 80-84 roller & channel bracket then I'll sell the kit for $25.00 + shipping as that is the parts that are hard to find...
