well yesterday i found the problem, the clutch side piston is missing half the skirt and when i went to remove the piston pin the other half broke off. so now all i need is a couple pistons and a gasket/seal set. does anyone know how to tell the difference between the 340ccw and the 440ccw? cause when i pulled the left head the top of the cylinder had 340 written on it and the fan housing has the decal on it saying it is a kec 440/22. does that matter? are the parts the same for the 440 and the 340?

Ocassionaly one will find a 340 jug on a 440 engine. Could be what they did was bored the 340 out as a replacement jug.
Measure the bore of the two jugs you have. They maybe the same or one may be standard and one 20 over for example.
Sometimes 340 heads were put on a 440 jug to boost compression a bit. Or the head marked 340 may have been milled out to the 440 specs.
Either way look over all the parts closly and measure everything. ideally both sides would be exactly the same.
Also most importantly inspect your crank for damage caused by the broken skirt.
Little slivers of metal in your rod bearings or crank bearings are very likely.

Last summer I had a rash of engine issues with recently purchased machines.
I found one engine with 20 overbore jugs with one 20 over and one standard piston.
One with 20 over jugs and pistons but standard rings.
And one with no rings at all.
Sometimes sellers just slap parts back in and unload the thing for someone else to sort out.
No problem, it's what I live for.

well i got my parts yesterday and got the engine reassembled and put back in the sled. i finally got it to run, for a couple seconds anyway but that was with carb cleaner. if anyone can tell me what lines from the tank go to what ports on the carb and how to set the carb up it would be much appreciated. i really need to find a starter for this sled cause my back and shoulder can't take that much pulling anymore! anyone know of where i might be able to find one?

The center inlet on the bottom of the carb in the fuel in, the one offset is fuel return, and the one on the side is the impulse to the crank case. Off the top of my head, I think the high speed needle should be at 1 1/2 turns out, and the low speed at 1 turn out.

The mixture screw on the top of the carb is the main, or high speed one.
