fan bearings

Post by big danno 1970 »

I am working on a 1980 340 trailfire and need to replace the fan bearings,is there an aftermarket bearing or do I need to go to deere or cat to get them?None of my jobber books list any fan bearings.
Thanks

It's just a standard bearing. Take it into your local auto parts store and they can match it up.

No problem. Just in case you don't know there is a snap ring between the bearings, you need to put the housing on the bench and use a punch reach down to knock out the bottom bearing first.

Thanks again Murray,That is good to know. Now if I could just get this stubborn flywheel off I could replace those pesky crank seals.
As far as I can tell this engine is a virgin meaning that shes never been apart and that is probably why the flywheel is on so well.Oh well patience, penetrating fluid and a B.F.H and Im sure it will come off.
Wish me luck

Don't use a B.F.H. on your flywheel, that will hurt the bearings in the engine.
Instead a heavy duty puller should be used, you can tap lightly on the puller bolt.

DON'T whack it! :)

yes never hit the flywheel directly with the bfh or it will break the magnets

I was just kidding on the BFH but this is a stubborn one so it is tempting,I will just leave tension on the puller and just tap it once and awhile and eventually it will come.

If a flywheel is really stubborn you can take the stator screws out through the slots in the flywheel and split the case with the flywheel still on the crank. Then just find a press and and pop the flywheel off that way. I have had to do this a couple of times, those little 8mm bolts are not that strong and if the flywheel is really stuck they can end up bending or breaking before the flywheel gets loose.

Most automotive type steering wheel pullers will line up with the bolt holes on the flywheels, & most Ace Hardware Stores carry a good grade of metric bolts.. Don't even try using the Kawi hub bolts as they aren't made to pull flywheels with, better to save them for the job they were designed for...

Kenny,I am useing a steering wheel puller and the bolts I have are actually from a early 70s suzuki gt750.It is no wonder those bikes were so heavy,I have had 2 feet of leverage on the wrench(not on this application) and the bolts didnt break so they must be made of good quality metal IE heavy.
This is one stubborn SOB. I have done many engines over the years and have always got the fly wheel off but there is always a first.
Anyways I get it off some how even if I have to heat it but that will be a last resort.
Just incase I wreck something,is the crank stator and fly wheel the same as as 80 and up spitfire?I have one with a bad cylinder I could use if need be.
Thanks
