Painting Exhuast?

Post by 79 Spitfire »

I'm going to pick up a can of spray paint after school to paint my exhaust on my Spit. What kind should I get that will hold up? Engine paint?

Jim, I know there is high temp flat black for exhaust. I don't know if regular engine paint would hold up to high exhaust temps, especially closer to the engine.

The highest temp paint you can find....should be able to find something around 1300deg F. Expect to repaint after a year or two.

But if you sandblast the pipe before painting it may last longer... :D

jd Muffler black high-temperature paint (TY25657) only claims to be good to 800 deg is this what was used originally? remember to be careful when blasting thin metal so as to not warp it. experience is a rascal. square flat panels may become rounded :wall:

Ya, I know my local ace hardware has rust stop paint the is for charcoal grills. It says it protects up to 1000 F. I don't plan on sandblasting it probably just smooth it with a air sander. Then wash it up.

Jim,

I am having my 340/s exhaust sandblasted, and then I am going to use JD muffler paint on it. But, the guys are right, it only last a few years. I am probably going to have the next one powder coated.

Yes, powder coating would be the best way to go if you have the money. I use to have a guy that did that but I have not talked to him for 3-4 years. I wish I still knew how to contact him because he powder coated some stuff for me awhile back.

Ohh Ya Powder coating is defiantly the way to go. Also VHT makes a header Ceramic spray that you should be able to get at any auto parts store.

High temp flat black engine paint will work but you have to cure it. The easiest way to do this is to paint it, install it and take your machine for a ride. Other wise the paint will chip real easy. They make a high temp silver as well but black would be more original. They have instuctions for curing on the back of the spray can.

Well I went to my local Ace Harware and got Krylon paint. It for grills and stoves. Says it protects up to 1200 F. Plus the thing that caught my eye was it says for inside of the grill to so it must be pretty protective I will check. And then I got a can of Super Lube Dri-Film for my suspension, I decided I would get it cause in another post we were talking about Lubricants in a can and anti seize. I couldn't find Fluid-Film but Dri-Film should work as well as the fluid film.

Thats just Silicon Spray. I have some at home. It works good esp on shovels whe the snows wet and heavy. The snow doesn't stick at all.

couple things i should point out powder coating exhaust doesnt work to well i have seen this tried on car exhaust manifolds a dozen times and it only lasts 6 months tops.

your painting tin pipe that not only gets hot but gets full of oil which penetrates the metal.

For black pipe i havent seen a desent paint yet most last about a year for cast iron however plasticote makes a exhaust paint now that works great i have been impressed with it since i also have used the same paint on brake drums with excellent results.

at moment i would go with sandblasting exhaust and either using an enamel while the item is very hot ( dont laugh it works stinks though ) or using plasticoat cast iron as base then throwing a bbq black overtop for looks.

The Krylon paint is among the best aerosol paints I've ever used. I especially like using the Krylon Fusion paint for plastics. Though it is sold as a paint to cover plastic, it is also recommended for metal and works extremely well with no need for priming (actually, it tends to react with most primers). The spray pattern is first rate....almost like using a good gun. Very resistent to running, fast drying and quite durable for an aerosol paint as long as you let it cure for a couple weeks before subjecting it to any handling. This being said, I don't think that there is a Krylon Fusion hi temp paint yet.
