Does any one know anything about scorpion sleds. Reason I ask is I am going to pick up a scorpion sting 440 1980. Just kinda wondering what kind of motor it might have. were they good sleds??

The Sting is a very good machine. Light, fast and excellent handling. Motor is a 440 Cuyuna.

My brotherinlaw had one. Not sure what model it was a 440 twin carbs Fan if remember right.

He kept burning up pto side piston. Make shure that the seals are good and clean carbs with proper jets.

Got her home last night. Has single carb, 440 no spark. Going to try and clean points. Any other points of intrest I should check for spark problem. Never owned a sled with points ignition. Other than that sled is in real good shape, also need to find a windshield. any help would be greatly appreciated. oh yeah what ratio do I mix the gas at??

thanks,
Dave

OK I need some help testing the ignition parts on this sting 440?? I really dont have much experience with points ignition. Before removing the flywheel I pulled it over while reading output on the wire supplying power to coil. I think it has some power but I dont know what it should read at just pulling it over. does any one know what kind of readings I should be getting, and procedures for testing ignition equipment, like what to test first and how.

Thanks,
Dave

scorpsrus.com, they will have almost any NOS parts you need. I have been told they have decent prices also. Need to order some bits for my whirlwind

Got into it and it has cdi Ignition; Should have looked a little closer. Wired in a different cdi box and coils, finally got spark. But it flooded itself extremely bad, I am talking gas spitting out of the exhaust. I am thinking a stuck float. Does this sound like it could be the problem??

It is possible to check the float by inverting the carb and seeing if the float closes the jets off. It is worth a try, never hurts to check on your gut feeling

Only Scorps that had CDI were 77 Bullwhip, 80-81 Sting and the 81 Sidewinder.
Walbro WF-1 carb needs to be throughly cleaned.
I am sure that Dennis would have a NOS windsheild for you.

Where did you find a CDI? they are very hard to land.

the sled has a mikkuni butterfly carb on it. it was in NE Minneapolis on craigs list. I wired a cdi and coils off of a 76 liquifire. thats what is kinda funny about this thing. the owner swore up and down that the points needed to be cleaned. so i said sold because that should be an easy fix I thought. I looked under the hood only once the night I bought it to make sure everything was there. I went to dig in today and saw cdi. I had a massy furgisson snowmobile a while back that had the same engine as this sting I bought. The massey came with the walbro carb on it. but both engines and even the air box look identical???
