Does yours have the the tunned pipe?

That was good for 56 HP if I remember right.

it took a little thinking as to which wires went were but it was not too bad. I figured it was worth a try. It doesnt look like a tuned pipe it. nothing like a set on like a 80 kawi motor or anything it looks like a single stock pipe.

There were two different exhausts used, both singles. One stock and the other the same as the TKX HP one.

I guess I dont know what it is then. from what I have heard of it running it sounds like it will be pretty healthy. It seems like it gets so flooded that it cant stay running. I am also thinking maybe fuel pump.

What about an improperly jetted carb? If the last owner didn't know it was a CDI sled then maybe the mikuni was never re jetted for the sting, the carb might be giving to much fuel for the motor.

JDT, I believe that my whirlwinds have a "tuned" exhaust on them, was this the "pipe" or the standard or are they too old for that difference. 56 hp in those light sleds sounds like a lot of fun. Can't wait to get mine back and see what it can do. Also I was talking to my uncle after he herd about the Massey's and he mentioned that a friend of his had an 81 sidewinder. Would it be worth pursing in your opinion or were they not that special?

I have the walbro and intake for the massey still maybe I will try to clean that up and try it. if that is what is supposed to be on that engine. that is what was in my massey. That old piece of **** was really fast. The bogies and track is what failed me..

is anyone sure if the 1980 sting didn't come with a mikkuni. carb and a fuel pump are seperate, and the walbro has the pump mounted to it. the setup looks pretty factory to me

I have one Massey Storm that has the HP pipe on it. My other Storm is missing the pipe .... and the engine. :(
I have a 80 Sting with the stock pipe. I sold the other one with the tunner many years ago. The buyer grass draged it.

The Sidewinder is just like an El tigre but it looks a lot sexier. They are bringing big bucks so if you can get it would be a sweet deal.

Couple of years ago I helped a guy fix up his Whirlwind. He had put twin carbs on it and some type of 2into1 performance exhaust on it. Maybe a hooker?
Had to remove one headlight to make it fit. It was nasty fast... nasty scary fast.

I just checked the 80 specs.

The butterfly came on the 340 TK.
The slide on the 440 tk and the Sting
The floater on the Whip.

40 is not to bad for the age, the sled doesn't weigh that much so it should be peppy. There is a 3 cylinder cyclone sitting back in a shed a few miles from my hunting cabin, I know the original owner. He said it was the most ignorant sled he has ever worked on, but one of the best he ever owned. Wished he never sold it back when. Might have to go take a look one day.
