fuel in the carb stays in the carb unless your vent lines are not crossed in which case it just evaporates. Some non pj carbs have a single vent hole at top these were notorious for being dry all the time.
when working properly and with correct vent lines fuel will stay in carb for about 3 months ( this causes tarnished fuel buildup in bowl )
the float bowl contains enough fuel to start engine and run long enough for fuel to be pumped from tank to carb under normal conditions.
A good ball check is more important on the 72-75 jds because the 10 feet of fuel line is a real pain to prime each and every time you start the sled. ( the bendix carb equipped sleds only used 5 feet still a pain to pump fuel )
the sportfire fuel system is really short completely dry 3 good pulls will have fuel in carb ready to start on a good working system (2 pulls normally but i go extra pull anyways) If it takes more pulls than that to put fuel to carb rebuild fuel pump and change impulse line.

I have had good luck with my ball checks, I do have a plunger style prime on my '73 400 and it works great, two shots with that and it starts right up, no choke needed which is esp. good since i changed it over to a tilly and never made a bracket for the choke.
