question

Post by SteveR »

I'm new here and to owning a snowmobile. I just got an old 79 trailfire and am trying to get it running better. A new belt is on the way but I'm really having trouble with it running fast. The lights go dim and sometimes out with a higher RPM. Wondering about a loose connection in the cable from the battery to the chassis but can't find that connection. Any suggestions would be appreciated. A reply by email is welcome. SteveR at sdr@geneseo.net

This is an Electric Start machine than?

There shoud be a heavy cable or wire from the negitive battery terminal to the engine case.

There may also be a smaller, 16 gauge wire, from the negitive terminal to the wiring harness of the sled. This may or may not be there.
If it is not there it must rely on the ground wire hooked to the stator to supply ground to the chassis from the battery. Check this connection.

Check your rectifier to see if it has a blown bridge (diode). An ohm meter will work well for this.

Also make sure that you have good conenctions (less than 1 ohm) between chassis, engine case, rectifier negitive terminal and the battery negitive.

As the rpm's increase so does the coil output voltage. If you regulator is breaking down it can suck down the voltage output as the rpm increases causing the lights to dim.
