Cooling system

Post by tsquare440 »

Need help, I have a 79 Invader 440 that is overheating. Let it idle too long and it dumped fluid. Refilled, and it held the fluid but heated up again.
So, I think I have a water pump problem but do not know where it's located, I assume it's belt driven. Could it be a matter of replacing seals, a belt or maybe need an entire new pump.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Possibility of a bad head gasket?? or head bolts not torqued to specs.

How do you correctly bleed the system of air? Open the screw on the coolant housing while engine is runnimg?

"Let it idle too long..." Do you think maybe you have already diagnosed the problem?

-Rich
I think Rich hit the nail on the head. You do realize that these motors are not supposed to idle more than 5 minutes. If the sleds not moving there is no air moving through the radiator and no snow being thrown against the bulkhead heat exchanger.

Thanks for the input, after looking at several things that could go wrong, thermostat and water pump, it was just a matter of letting it idle too long as Rich suggested, had it out in the neighborhood today and it kept a good temp of 160.
This is my first sled I'll get this thing figured out sooner or later...
Thanks again for any input
