It is clean around the motor. I responded to the add for the WDB-31 but did not get a response. I will keep looking.

Little update.

It turns out the little primer spicket on top of the carb WAS open. Plugged it up with a little silicone and it made quite a bit of difference. Seems to be starting even when warm!

I still have what seems to be unburnt fuel around the exhaust ports where the muffler attaches. Could it be burning too rich causing the unburnt fuel? I am using the NGK BR8ES plugs and I know some of you fellas say to go with the Champions. What # plug for the Kohler 300?

I just got caught up on this post, I used to have a Walbro on my 400, I had a primer connected to the barbed fitting and with 2 pumps of the primer, your fuel is primed to the carb and it starts right away, no using choke, esp since those sleds tended to break the dash if you weren't really careful with the choke. Lastly, i don't know if anyone else has tried this but I was given a tip one time on how to effectively check your PTO side seal. Have it idling and spray either carb cleaner or gas liberally at the seal, between the clutch and the motor, if you hear it rev up right away then chances are you have a bad crank seal. Seems to work pretty well.
P.S. I now have a Tillotson on my 400 and it seems to work great other than the air box no longer fits.

I was at an ice fishing tournament yesterday and ran the sled pretty hard all day. And I am glad to say it started all day really without a problem. I even pulled two big guys in otter sleds and one guy on the seat with me as we moved from one end of the lake to the other. Pretty big load for a 300 but it handled it without a problem. I do still have excess fuel around the exhaust manifold.

Actually clean engines on these sleds are more of a worry than engines that are dirty since exhaust oil does a number on engine area( its right in middle of sled) a clean engine area around belt and recoil but rest dirty is a fairly good sign of possible engine seals. Belt side is usually pretty dirty with belt grime and recoil side has a fair amount of oil from exhaust over the years unless someone pressure washes it from time to time. Fuel leaking out exhaust is probably from your running a tad rich.

As a note primers on these sleds are not a good idea either inline hand pump primers for boats or ski doo type primers 10 feet of fuel line is alot of fuel line. Skidoo type have bad tendancy to leak air into fuel line which when sitting means you have to pump fuel from tank to engine. Inline boat primers dont like high flow fuel and have a tendancry to collapse, they are made for single engine boats up to i believe 50hp motors.

Aside from that the update about hauling people around is nice thanks its a good story if you have pics post it up in general.

As a precaution keep an eye on that silicone that you put in that Primer spicket it might get sucked out, IF it does put a little dab of RTV on a small screw & screw it in the spicket then it'll stay.. Most of the old carbs all had a screw in the spickets if they weren't being used..
