Scorpion Whip

Post by wycrumb »

Hey all,
My friend brought over a 1975 Scorpion Whip last night, blue sparkle hood, he has 2 engines that the compression looks good on, 682 miles. The track is in perfect conditon and it is copmlete besides needing skiis, new seat cover, and a windshield. Please help me out with a website with infor or any info you might have on how many where made, how to tell exactly what year it is, so on.
Thanks for the help!
P.S. The kicker with this sled is that his Dad asked someone what they were going to do with it, they said, "get it out of there and its yours"! Extra engine and all!

Your Whip is a 75 model. Note that the first digit of the serial number is a 5.
75 is the first year of the whip and they built a ton of them. 75-77 all had blue hoods but 75 is the only metalflake one.
You have two weeks to fix this one up before the Scorpion Reunion in Crosby where the 75 Whip is the featured model.

There is a set of skis and springs on ebay right now. They end tomorrow. NOS grips are on all the time for $12.
Are both engines 340cc? Not to worry as this machine is very light and the 340 is plenty fast. The 440 model is a rocket!

Yours is missing the bumper ends caps, bumper trim insert and the right side hood vent. These parts are not tough to find. New windsheilds are still available.
If you do make it to Crosby there is always a lot of swap guys there and a truckload of NOS parts.

Couple of website of interest are www.scorprus.com and www.trailasled.com

Thanks for the info! We found the website for the show and it shouldn't be bad to get it going, is anyone from this site going? The Rockwell engine in it had the heads loose, we took them off, the cylinders felt fine, pistons were very black but we tightened them back down and the compression was 165 on one side and 150 on the other. The second engine is a Cayuna (sp?), it is at about 150 on both sides. Should I get new head gaskets for the one with the loose heads? Was the rockwell the original engine?

Yep, the Cuyuna engine is the correct one. The 75-78 engines were bullet proof. The late 79 -81 engines suffered from QC issues after Cat bought them out.
This is rumored to be engineered into the engines as Cat knew the reliability of the Cuyuna was high and they did not need the competetion.

Pretty much all parts are still made. Even complete engines as the Cuyuna 430 is a favorite with the Ultralight crowd.
Several guys out there are sitting on large inventories of NOS parts and they are reasonable on their prices.
Dennis Kutz and Chip Amberg are two of them.
