Pull start pawl
I replaced rings and pistons and decided to put on a new rope got that in easy but now I can't get the tooth to come out when it spins the little spring is on the outside of the pawl. Any ideas on what I might be missing here? Thanks.

There should be a coil type spring that one end goes into the part that the paws mount in & the other sticks through the cover that gets bolted on last if it's not put in properly the cover won't twist to push the paws out or in.. maybe someone could post a picture out of a service manual for correct installation of this spring..

Recoils can be a bear. Every brand is different.
If you are not careful when you disassemble one it can blow up in your face. Parts fly in all directions and you have 12 feet of uncoiled spring laying on the floor.
Compare yours to a working one.
Best bet is to look at a serivce manual as Kenny recomended. Most manuals have good close up pictures and step by step assembly instructions.
Just account for all the pieces as you take them apart. It is amazing how nice a properly cleaned and lubed recoil works.

The service manual I looked in doesn't have the same recoil as mine. I have the single pawl and it looked like the coil spring under the pawl went on the outer edge. Is the plastic cover supposed to rotate? This one has a flat spot in the center that only lets it stay in one spot on the center shaft. The recoil spring did come out and made me sad for a minute but I ended up holding the center kink and wound it up with my hand, luckily I got it back in. This was the first time I ever had luck with one of these. I cleaned the paw and put graphite on it but still no luck. I even melted some lead on the tip and it half engages but still not properly.

Check the starter hub or cage that bolts to the flywheel. Sometimes there is excessive wear on this part that prevents the pawls from engaging fully when they extend.
Are you sure you have the correct recoil for this engine? Also is the hub correct? Did it work correctly before?

This was working before I took it apart, when you leave the spring off the pawl it will fully engage so I think it's right for the motor. It's almost like there's not enough counter weight to make it engage, but that doesn't explain how it used to work.

Plastic single dog O.o sound like something from a rotax engine. These should have all steel parts three dogs with funny little springs on them cover washer spring and nut. the tops spring that sticks through is to help return the cover to rest so that dogs dont get stuck in engine, its has 0 bearing on engagement. thats handled by friction between the wide washer and the cover. the washer puts just enough friction on cover to slide dogs out if washer is put in upside down is missing or is worn out recoil will not engage most of the time.
Pics of your recoil would help alot btw.

That recoil sounds like the one that is on my '84 Sportfire, plastic reel and only one dog (but a spot that looks like there could be two). I should say it was on my Sportfire because as you can see from the picture the plastic reel looks to have broken and carnage is the result. I was having a nice ride this afternoon that was cut short unfortunately. Looks like I am going to disconnect the oil injection and put on an earlier recoil with a metal reel. I premix the gas anyway. I don't know if the pic will be of any help fixing your recoil, it is pretty mangled up.

WOW, that ones way out of my league, that must be a oil injection recoil only?? As I've never seen one like that before??
Thanks for the picture Murray

It's an oil injection recoil, you can see the hole in the center for the shaft that drives the pump. My '82 Trailfire had the oil injection removed and an older style recoil on it when I got it, I think I know what happened now.

Here is a pic of the recoil off my '80LF. I broke the rope so I had to take it apart to rewind. I would have given my left for the JDM-113 coil winder tool this afternoon. Made a makeshift one out of a few spare parts, but would really like to make a proper one for future use. If anyone has one and can give me a few basic measurements I'd appreciate it.
I'm also having trouble getting the pawls to properly engage now. I've got the service manual but must have had something out of place when I put it together because now I've bent the torsion spring. Anyone still carry these springs? I'm pretty sure they are the same on all the fire series sleds. I had it properly installed in the little hole, then hooked it through the coil cover, but when I tried to spin the cover counterclockwise to seat (like the manuals says) the spring bent. What's the trick here?
Thanks for the help and sorry to hijack the post...Mitch

That spring is not that bad. It should still work. I have seen more deformed ones that still did the trick.

I have the single-paw recoil as well on the Sportfire. I had questioned it back in December too: http://s12.zetaboards.com/jdsleds/topic/5013480/1/

maybe a bent end.... Try again.. That black rubber under those 3 pawl springs, on the ones I have seen them on go over the springs not under
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.
