Question about Odd Cyl. Wear Pattern

Post by ICCSF 108 »

I have a Question about a Odd Cyl. Wear Pattern on a cyl. from a KEC440/21 engine. I'm disassembling & cleaning up the parts for storage of a KEC440/21 ( Reed Valve ) engine, I honed the cylinders to grease them up so they don't rust in storage, after honing one of the cylinders I noticed that this cylinder is wore in between all the ports?? ( between the all transfers & exhaust ) the hone didn't even touch this part of the cylinder?? (about 1/2" to 3/4" in height)
I've never saw this before on any engine & if I would have been using one of those cylinder hones with all the little balls I probably wouldn't have noticed this??
Any Idea of why all this wear in this area??

Could a ring with carbon build-up underneath do that?

Well, it can't wear IN the port, so that's the only contact area that is left.

But why only in that area & not above the ports also?? I was wondering about a badly machined liner bore, a little to wide at the bottom, that would make the piston move/slap more at BDC & therefore causing the rings to wear the cyl. at that point??
I'll clean the grease out of the cyl again & try to get some pictures.

 Well It is one of 2 ways, either everything looked good on that side.. or it was the other side & was at BDC & was stuck so bad :wall: I had to pound it out even after days of soaking.. oh yea I forgot to mention the mouse nest that was from the top of the piston @ BDC to the top of the head... Thus why the piston was stuck.. :lol22:
