Looks like the sleeves are not inserted all the way down in the cyclinders.

Burn Down?

Post by mwking »

The sleeves on my '84 sportfire are the same, they are ok. The way they stick up surprised me off the first time I took the heads off too, the Sports use copper ring head gaskets, I expected them to look like a Trailfire. I would use some muriatic acid (very carefully with gloves, eye protection and fresh air) to clean off the aluminum the pto piston will have deposited on the cylinder. Hone the cylinders, replace the PTO piston, clean up the mag side piston and reseal the motor with new gaskets and seals. Make sure the fan belt is tight, don't forget to rotate it as you are tightening the nut (if you are useing the fan holding tool) to keep the belt from being pinched.

The cylinders, don`t look great. I got an Nos set, that Im going to use.

I need a set of pistons yet.

What do you recommend? Are wiseco worth the money? I don`t want real cheap pistons, but the wisecos are a little pricey.

Im about to head out to the shop, and prepare a spot to rebuild this engine. I`ll have it torn down tonight, and cleaned up. I have a set of winderosa gaskets, and seals for it also.

What am I suppose to use to seal the crankcase halves? I forget, and can`t find it on here.

Man those wisecos are expensive!

Anybody know where I can score some Nos pistons?

Me like Nos!

The cheapest set are the Parts Unlimited on Dennis Kirk I had to buy a set for my Sportfire, because I couldn't find NOS rings. They should be about $52 a piece w/rings and wrist pins.

What are some of my other options for pistons?

I figured the Nos stuff is going to be a little harder to find, but their out there. Then again, it`s not very important to have Nos parts that you cant see! An aftermarket piston will do just fine, but I would like to know which is the best piston I can get thats not a wiseco? I heard the PU pistons arent that great, and when it comes to engines, I don`t like to skimp.

threebond 1104 for sealing engines. also repacked as yamabond, kawabond, etc.

the scoring looks awful keep the old pistons in case of emergencys.

There is a bunch available on ebay mostly nos pistons, kimpex pistons are widely available for these engines which are pretty good since they are within about .5 grams of each other, wiesco are more expensive and while they dont make them anymore there is a supply around.

Maybe I'll go with kimpex.

Did Wiseco quit making pistons for the Liquifire, or are they the same piston?

Thanks for the help, I`ll get some pistons ordered this week hopefully.

MFG Supply sells "SPI" brand pistons. A few of us have used them in rebuilds, no complaints yet, but I don't think they are much cheaper at 46.76 each. http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/09-689..html?id=k3pJsoDa

Even though the SPI's come from our far-east friends they are infact a good product.

The only friends I have there, arent citizens. I would like to buy american, even though the engine is Japanese!

Does anybody know if kimpex pistons are made here?

Im single now, so I can spend money on my sleds instead of her.

Maybe Ill just go with the wisecos! :D

Kimpex pistons are glass cast pistons made in canada. Wiesco pistons are forged made in the US.

Before you ask what glass cast means is that the inside portion is cast in glass instead of sand requires less machining and also makes them a near match in wieght than others.

I think the Kimpex should be a good choice for the money.... I trust Canada. :canada:
