82 Liquifire crankcase question

Post by Norton »

There is a 1/8 inch hole on the pto side/front of our Liquifire crankcase that is drilled through to the outside of engine. Is/was this a weep hole for the OEM 2 piece seal? New seal set is a double lip one piece type. Will this all become obvious when it goes together?

Thanks .

if it is in the upper crankcase half, about an inch from the gear case it is the gear case vent hole. "this hole must be open and not obstructed to insure proper seal operation. If this hole is plugged, oil from the gear case could be sucked into the crankcase through the seal between crankcase and gear case. this whould result in gear and bearing failure."- TM-1217 (Nov-81)

Thanks jdsnowfire for the response.

I read that in the TM too. This new one piece 2 lip seal that came as part of a gasket & seal set for a Liquifire & from a good company.

Should I be shopping for an OEM seal then? This new one piece design will block this vent/weep hole! Should we just accept the fact that this is a new design and is "better than the OEM"?

If it blocks the vent hole, I wouldnt use it. I wouldnt accept it as better than oem either. The two piece seal has always worked fine.

Just my two cents.

What company did they come from? Did it come in a gasket set?

The new style double lipped seals work just fine. Keep in Mind NOS Deere seals are now at least 29 years old..
