76 Whirlwind burn down
Well I've done it now. Looks like I melted the PTO side piston. I still have to tear the motor down and figure out what went wrong with the motor. But I need to know where to get parts. Would It be better to contact the guys at scorpsrus or can I just order from sun and snow locally? Here is what happened.
- Stopped to vist a cousin on my way home
-Went over to his uncles shop to pick up his Everest. I noticed that my whirlwind was done so I went over and puled the rope. Started good so i decided to take it for a maiden voyage. Ran well cruised at around 40 mph to his house, no problems.
- Noticed the engine was a little warm but figured it was a warm night and a fan cooled.
- We decided to make a quick run to the local bar or a beer, as it was not far away.
- Low on fuel I borrowed some from him, it was just regular fuel but I did not see the problem with just one tank.
- Rode it 8 miles and we stopped at another yard for a few minutes. Massey was a little hard to start but not bad.
- Rode another 3-5 miles and met so friends on the trail, talked for a few minutes and it fired right up without incident.
- Made it another 5 or so miles and got to a field, good amount of snow and the Massey was bogging a bit. Then I heard 3 pops and lost power. Pulled the spark plug and looked down the holes with a cell phone for light and it looked like the PTO side piston was melted a it on the exhaust side.
- Luckily his uncle found the sled on his way home that night and dragged it back to his place.
So what did it? I think it was the fan or the PTO side seal. It was making a slight squeak or squeal at low speed/ idle. Does anyone know what material the bores are? What is best for gaskets and pistons? It was a fun little sled to ride and I need to get it back on the trail.

The parts to rebuild a Cuyuna are easy to find. Trout Creek Sales has pistons on ebay right now. Gasket- seal sets are still avavilble.
After market pistons are still made. The SPI's are real good.

Also Check fan bearings and the belt to see if that was the noise and problem that caused the over temp.

I was wondering if the fan might have been to blame. To top it all off the near perfect hood got caught by the wind ad hit the bumper, taking a dime sized chunk out of it.

Yes, without a functioning fan she is going to get hot fast. A new belt is $4 and proper tension is important.
If you have a bad or missing vane get a different fan. An out of balance fan will take out the bearings and be less that effecient at moving air.

I just hope I didn't gouge the bore or wreck the crank when she went.

Dennis at Scorps R-Us would have anything you would need also. I will be seeing him at the Scorp Show next weekend I am sure.
You know any Masseys built at Crosby are also welcome to the show. There are always several there. That is where I saw the Murader that we talked about a few years ago.

I guess I have to pick my piston brand. I talked with the guy that is going to rebuild them today. He said get 3 types STP (his preferred), Wiseco and boxer. All for 70 - 80 a piece. I looked on EBay I can get LLP for between 20-50 dollars for a set!
I believe that I have LLP in one of my LF's without incident. Any advise will be appreciated.

Sounds like you rebuilder is a little greedy or needs to shop around some more. SPI's are $45 each.
I have used LLP's and as long as you are staying stock they are fine.
Times is tough, got to be thrifty.

The price he gave came out of his ordering book. So with the profit from his supplier tacked onto the price it inflates a bit. I hope to keep the stock bore but will have to see what he says later tonight. I think I will just order the LLP's at 1/3 the cost.

You have a 440? There is both 340 and 400 NOS pistons on ebay right now at $20. Cedar Farms is the seller. Nice guy, I have dealt with him before.
