78 Liquifire Electrical Issues

Post by nothingbutadeere »

Late last winter I developed a spark issue with my 78 Liquifire. I was getting inconsistent spark from the two plugs. I checked them by pulling on the starter rope as the plugs lay on top of the block. I changed out the two external coils, which made no difference. I then purchased and installed a new CDI from Hewtech, which made no difference. I then tested and removed the stator and sent it out to be re-wound. I got it back and put it back in and the she started on the third pull and ran like a charm. After about 10-15 minutes of running, the engine started to back fire and sputter out. I checked the spark from the plugs again and am back to the original problem I had before the stator was repaired. I still have yet to test it to see what the readings are, but wanted to get an idea if there may be somehting I am missing? I figured I basically had a new stator since it was rewound and varnished by hand. Could something else be causing the electrical to fail?

Start with checking the ohm readings of the stator and also check all your connections / grounds. If the ohm readings are as before you sent out the stator, contact the company that did it and see if they will honor any type of warranty, but that is probably not likely.
I would also consider looking for another good used stator.

After having replaced both external coils, CDI box and rebuilt stator, should I also be concerned with replacing the inner timing ring? Is there a test that can be done on that as well? Can this contribute to the failure of the stator?

The timing ring specs are included with specs of the stator.
