Now to replace the stator do I have to split the motor and/or time it? Can I get buy without splitting the motor if it is the case?

Brandon,
Ebay item 130285545102 that Tod found for you could work. It is from a 77 liquifire with round style plugs. Everything will bolt up under the flywheel but the length of the wires could be a problem for the cyclone coil mounting plate. The liquifire wires are shorter. The last resort would be to splice the orignal wires but try and avoid that.
Email the seller to check the ohms specs of the stator.
As Todd stated, you do not have to split the crank case. The tricky part is removing the green/yellow strip wires from the engine connector. You need to fab a tiny flat push pin to release the spade connectors from the engine connector block.

Well my parts are ordered stator and timing ring. Can they be put in separately or are they pretty much one unit. I want to avoid screwing the timing up, due to my inexperience in that area of a 2 stroke. So if I can somehow leave the timing untouched it would be alot less on my mind.
Thanks
Thanks

Brandon,
Did you buy the stator / timing ring on ebay Item number: 130285545102. If you did, it may not work. I had given the seller the ohm specs and he found the low speed windings were bad and never removed the item from ebay.
To remove / install the stator & timing ring, as stated before the recoil, fan housing and flywheel need to removed. A steering wheel puller is needed to rewmove the flywheel using the proper length metric bolts which screw into t he flywheel.
The stator is hld in place with 4 small machine screws
The timing ring is also held in place with 4 small machine screws
The wires pass thru a hole cut out in the crankcase inside of a rubber grommet. Pop out the gromment first, then pass the wires thru.
Be sure to replace the gromment during installation.
You should really follow the service manual on this repair.

Well can a good electronics shop repair it?
JD 400 problems
Well Rich, this 400 is pretty rough. Nothing I can't fix but its rough been outside for 20 some years until now. And unfortunately I'm not going to Horicon. Does anybody else have a stator lying around?
