high RPM movement

with my 74 jdx8 i have to really wind up those RPM's to get the clutch to engage or get it to move. i'm replacing the buttons in the driven sheave. will this help or is there a yet larger problem

probably a problem in the primary.

More than likely the problem is with either the clutch weights or worn bushings in the primary clutch. With the clutch removed from the engine, remove the outer cover from the clutch, loosening every other bolt, then the rest of them. Keep in mind the cover is under spring pressure. Once you have the outer cover off and remove the main spring, you should be able to check for binding weights/pivot points and worn bushings. Without the special tool( grunt tool), you cannot take the clutch apart any farther. If the clutch is worn badly, it is wise just to get another one.
