Interesting 2 Stroke Technical

Post by oscar89 »

Seems large diesel engines such as those used in ships & locos are 2 stroked. W/ the addition of a turbo or supercharger to pressurize the intake externally these engines are able to use a wet oiled crankcase as w/ a 4 stroke. You no longer need the piston to pump the air/fuel into the cylinder & can seal off the crankcase. No more need to burn oil & prematurely wear out a 2 stroke engine due to poor lubrication. This techinique would seem much better than the oil in gas thing.

Right you are that?s why they use it in ships

The only problem is you have to have a dedicated oil system with a pump, sump and Babbitt bearings replacing roller bearings as well as the machining of oil passages.

Skirting on each cylinder to control oil and pressures

throw in a blower and.........

Just not cost effective ????..although the four stroke boys are getting close!

Just came to me, be hard to keep the oil out of the intake & exhaust ports as well.

Another thing to remember, those 2 cycles have exhaust valves. 7000 RPM with the sled engines with valves, more parts to wear.
