you should pull the recoil and the little cover above it and chrck the fan belt. I melted a piston on my x8 last season do to a bad belt.

I just nuked my 440 whirlwind because of it. I herd the noise and disregarded it. Long story I short melted my PTO side piston, not fun at 1:30 am. I would recommend checking things out before something happens.

Could be the fan bearings also. Pull the belt and spin the fan with you finger. If it is rough or noisy replace both bearings and put a new belt on.

Im judging by the look of the leaking carb boot to the engine and the rusty exhuast that this engine has not run for quit a while, pull that sucker and go through it and replace crank seals and that carb boot at the very least.Do this now before you melt a piston or worse!
77 cyclone question
Thanks for the tip about the carb boot i will check on that tomarow This spring i will restore it and look every thing over. I just got it in December From a Neighbor for $100 it was outside under a cemi trailer for 5 years. i got it to run for the winter and have put a few miles on it and a little money into it. Here are some pictures. I will defenetly look it over and replace a few things be for i ride it much more this winter.

get those crank seals done asap!!!I bet when you take the old ones out there will be pieces missing from at least one of them.Last winter I got a 340trailfire for free it had not run for many years I got it to run and took it around the yard once and it seemed to run great.I then replaced the seals as I always do and almost half the seal was gone!! and it still ran!!!If I had taken the sled for a run accross the field it would have burnt a piston for sure.
Like I said replace them asap, they are a VERY important part of a 2 cycle engine.

Also look into rotating your pull start counter clockwise one position. Looks to me its installed incorrectly.

If you have done seals in a yamaha then you can do this engine, just get a service manual andfollow the directions.Winderosa should have your gasket set.
