400 pistons
I have a 1972 400 and was wondering if anybody can tell me if the 340 engines with a 60mm bore and 60mm stroke have the same pistons in them. I found some after market ones, but the application only lists the 2,3,4,and 5 engines. Can somebody please tell me if there is a difference and what it would be? Or is the 1972 engine classified as the (2) group? What are the differences between the numerical groupings? Any information would help me greatly. Thanks, Tony.

The 340/2/3/4/5 were all the same except for the crankshaft output on the clutch side. The 72s had 25 mm and after that it went to 30 mm. I think they just changed the number every year. Yours doesnt say it on the motor but I believe that that is a 340/3. The 1973s are 340/4s and 74 and 75 are 340/5. They first listed the number on the 340/5s. Until then I guess it was implied. They changed in 76 to the 340/22 which is a totally different beast. Could you tell me where you found the pistons? The only place I could find anything for my 73 was central snowmobile in green bay. Thanks and I hope this helps.

Thanks. That helps a lot. I found them on Ebay thru troutcreeksales out of Wisconsin. The item # is 200302504964 Buy it now for about 50 bucks complete minus bearings for about another 3 days. Thanks again for your info and I hope I was able to help you out in return.

Don't you just love trying to finish someone elses jigsaw puzzle?
I had a motor from another brand of sled last year that had a 340 bottom, 440 jugs and 400 heads and was missing the pistons rings.
The POS just slapped a pile of pieces together and left it for the unsuspecting buyer to sort out.
It's what I live for....
