Trailfire carb

Post by stanger »

Hey just bought a 1982 Trailfire LX today, seems like a good runner rebuilt Kawi 440 single Mikuni 34.. my question is what is the proper way to adjust the carb air screw and idle screw?? this sled does not have a tach either.. also what oil and gas mixture should be ran in this sled... the previous owner said 40:1 but had a 20:1 mixture for the first tank of gas on the rebuild now i got it and ready to fuel it up but not sure what a safe mix would be.. I've heard 40:1 but the Kawasaki snowmobiles like the intruder are 20:1.. not a speed demon just want a safe premix for it. Also what plugs should be ran and proper plug gap??
Thanks!

No premix needed. Just add a good quality oil to you reservoir and run. I run the heck out of my john deere without premix without any problems, and when i'm talking run the heck out of them i mean 2000 miles in a year. I believe BR8ES for plugs and 1-1 1/12 turns on air screw

Well thanks for the reply but the old trailfire has no oil reservoir or oil pump and one cable on the throttle so im guessing its a factory premix sled, its a 440 2 stroke kawasaki motor with a single carb, any help on how to premix this machine would be greatly appreciated as i think running her with no premix might be a bad idea.. but thanks anyway deeroftheyear.

Hi,

Your '82 LX sound a lot like mine. Someone had disconnected the oil injection and removed the oil tank before I got it as well. It had an earlier recoil on it with no provision for the oil pump. I swapped on an earlier manifold without the injectors and put on a single throttle cable to complete the removal. The pre oil injection Trailfires called for 50:1 premix. I run closer to 40:1 with no problems.

The plug gap should be .025. The NGK website lists BR8ES as the plugs for these, although some guys do run 9's, they are a cooler plug, if you don't have any fouling problems they should be fine.

hey i got her tuned up and took the trailfire out today, it ran ok but seemed like she always had to be full throttle... quarter throttle or half it was kinda boggy and sputtery but 3/4 and full throttle it took right off... so i checked the fuel lines and they seemed like there wasnt much gas in them and the fuel filter didn't have much gas in it either so pulled the pulse line on the pump and it was really wet... possible bad diaphram?? if so i have a brand new fuel pump in a parts intruder of mine.. could i make the fuel pump for dual carbs work for a single carb application?? thanks!
