I am having a wiring issue with my '74 300. I think the sled originally had electric start because I have the battery box and the whole solenoid setup for the starter. When I run a battery in the sled, everything is fine with the lights. But the other day the battery went dead from sitting and when I went out for a ride the headlight and the tail light blew out.
In the wiring diagram for a '74, it shows jumper wires in the big seven pin plug if the electric start is not used. It shows a jumper from the black to the brown with white stripe and from the brown wire to the red. The problem is that there are two red wires. Which one do I use? The wires are not in the same order as in the diagram either. A picture of your setup would be great. Thanks.

With the multi-pin connector unpluged and no jumpers wires on the open plug you have removed the voltage regulator from the system.
Why not just plug the connector back in and isolate the positive battery connect with some black tape so that it can not touch chassis ground?
By the way I do not see a cable from the engine to the negitive battery terminal. When you have the battery in was it only hooked to chassis ground by the two black wires attached to the frame?

I guess that was my question..... where do the jumper wires go?
I have a ground from the engine case to the chassis and from the chassis to the battery.
With a charged battery and the cables connected, everything works great. Unhook the battery or if it is completely discharged, the lights blow.
If I isolate the positive cable and run it with no battery, isn't that like running it with the plug unhooked and no jumpers also eliminating the voltage regulator?

You must first figure out where the 2 red wires go to identify them. One goes to the back of the ignition switch and the other should be a red wire which goes either to the brake light switch or the headlight switch. It is this wire that gets jumped over to the brown / white wire and also the black wire gets jumped to the brown wire.
