Hood painting question!!!!
Hood painting question!!!!
I am going to be painting a couple of sportfire & trailfire hoods soon. I am tapeing off my decals for they are fine. I am not looking to go to a auto shop or equivilant. Does anyone have any info on a readily available spray paint that matches the original color very close. Also is there a sealer coat to that should be put on afterwards?
Thanks,
Joe

Hood painting question!!!!
I dont know of any rattle can paints to do a two part paint the would be off the shelf and by any good. I would assume that you are trying to do the winterfrost II paints. There isnt anything on the market that I am aware of that would be close. Good luck.

Hood painting question!!!!
i know sometimes if you can find a place to mix up the John Deere silver color sometimes they can also make it into a rattle can as opposed to a can of paint.

Hood painting question!!!!
I painted the hood on my 82 lx will rattle cans using dull aluminum as a base and then spray can clear coat. Its not a perfect match but it looks decent. heres a few pics of the sled

Hood painting question!!!!
Great info guys!! I called Case IH & they have plenty on hand at $7.89 a can.
Did you use a clear coat after using this Case IH paint????
For tapeing the decals, just tape & use a razor blade to follow the edges???? That is what I plan to do unless there is a better way!
Thanks,
Joe

Hood painting question!!!!
I have used the Case IH wheel paint on my '82 Trailfire and I like the colour, it looks very close to the original. It is wheel paint and dosn't have a high shine to it, I sprayed a couple of coats of clear over it and buffed it to get some shine, a little wet sanding with 1500-2000 grit before buffing will help too. No one would mistake it for a professional job, but it looks good enough for a sled I am planning on riding a lot. I can't see spending a few hundred bucks on a paint job and then worrying about getting a scratch on it. This way I can always redo it or touch it up as needed. I used the tape and razor blade technique to mask off the decals and it worked fine.

Just make sure that the base paint is compatible with the clear coat or vise-versa.
You can also remove the masking from the decals and apply the clear over them also.

Hood painting question!!!!
Sounds good! Just in the off chance I would like to get a quote from a auto shop, is there a known paint code for the silver??
Also - I might as well repaint my 83 liquifire hood while I'm at it. Can I use any gloss black paint or is there something else I should use. Is there a paint code for the black as well????
Thanks for the help!!

Hood painting question!!!!
like Todd said you can remove the masking to do the clear thats what I did
also instead of cutting with a razor blade just use 1/4 inch tape to do the edges this is very easy to shape to the curves of the decal then tape your wider tape to the 1/4

Re: Hood painting question!!!!
I know this is an old thread but I am planning on re painting my sled hood. I need to strip it first but I dont know what I should use. Also it has a little bit of damage were I need to like bondo it or something. Will Bondo work on the Fiberglass hoods?? What is a good Stripping agent that wont harm the hood?? I think I read somewhere that Blitz Black is still available form Deere so I should be able to get a quart or so and spray up my hood. Thanks.

Bob, I'm no painter by any means, but I would think that all you would want to do is sand it down, not strip it?? Those hoods might be gel coated??? I really don't know?? I would ask someone who knows & see what they recommended doing..

Re: Hood painting question!!!!
Bob,
Use a heat gun to help remove the stickers. Then use goo-gone or a similar product to get any residue off. I usually use a scotch brite pad to assist in the removal.
Then make your repairs and prep the hood for paint.
I used some automotive spray paint from Autozone. I primed then painted the hood on my 84 Sportfire. Not a professional job by any standards....but it turned out decent and all for around $30.00 or so!

Hey Bob,
There is an FAQ about repairing the newer style hoods:

Also, Liquifires are NOT Blitz Black! They are a high-gloss black.
