Long time! I like what youve done to the place!

Post by KennyH »

The last ime I was here I was stripping a 72 JD 500 to put the motor into a race sled I was making. Musta been a year and a half ago or so.
Well now I've burned that motor down so I come seeking help, info and most likely parts if they are to be found.
The motor in question is a 440 CCW. But like an idiot I got rid of the tag when I cut the shroud off, and didn't write down the model #.
Is there any help for me and my Panther with a DEERE heart?
Thanks Guys.
Later,
Kenny

I really like your sled appropriately named ?FRANKEN PANTHER?. Although, apparently some find it offensive. :lol22:

I thought that was the word when I was doing this modification. What about over sized pistons for it? Same problem? How about aftermarket? IE Wiseco.

I didn't plan to make any one mad! It came out of a free sled and went into a free sled to make one I could race! It WAS winning when it locked up!!! :sled:
Thanks for the help so far!

Kenny

No. I think that sled is awesome. Why not use the whole Deere?

The only requirements for the race are, the sled has to be a Panther, 440 or less in motor size and we have to wear helmets!

Kenny, I have a NOS pair of 440 CCW pistons but there for the piston ported engines not the reed valve ones $100.00 pr with rings, pins & C- clips + shipping..

since the motor is out of a '72 500, shouldn't it be a piston ported motor?

No after market pistons available. ICCSF's would be the best bet, but I've been told that Rotax 440 F/A 20 over pistons will work, but I haven't had any one confirm that.

Bob, Just fan heads turned so they flow the air like the free air heads would do..

Mine is a piston ported engine, NOT reed valve.
Are the pistons standard or oversized...020-.030?
I haven't opened it up yet to know what it looks like inside, but this is what I do know, It is LOCKED up tight and there is aluminum on the recoil side spark plug. Plugs look like I was running it to lean.
Here is something else to throw out there, I can get a 400 CCW for FREE, MY FAVORITE price  , and it looks like I can still get pistons and rings for it fairly easy, even over sized, Just in case I torch another one.
How far over bore would I have to go to get it up to or past a 440 displacement. Any ideas?
I am definatley interested in the pistons and rings from you ICCFS 108, but will have to open it up before I can commit, OK? I am planning on getting after it this week or weekend.
As for the heads, ICCFS208 nailed it! But that is what makes him stand out, is those heads. At the shows I have taken him to that has people scratching their heads the most! And that is why I want to stay with a CCW.
Thanks for all the help!!!

Kenny, The pistons I have are standard 68mm & for the piston ported engines. Your cylinders will be steel or cast liners so all you'll have to do is scrape the aluminum out & hone them, Unless something caught a port & damaged it/them.. If you need a cyl or head & can furnish me with the casting numbers from them I might have used cylinders & heads??
