Hi,
Looking for correct replacement jets for Trailfire 440.
The engines are '79s. The manual lists newer jetting in '80 and up, something Rich explained was a year-to-year reliability improvement in earlier posts, so I thought I'd put in the newer jets.
Several catalogs I've looked at, Sun and Snow in Manitoba and Recreation Supply in Saskatchewan, list the Q-0 (159) for 30 to 36 mm carbs and the Q-0(166) for the 38 mm carbs.
The Fine Tune Manual I have from '81 (thank you vintagesnow.com) specifically mentions the second number with a needle jet as critical, and lists the Q-0(166) for the 440 TF. My gut is to follow the recommendations of the Fine Tune Manual, as catalogs are by necessity very generalized listings.
What do you recommend I order in?
And, if I find one of the carbs already has the right needle jet, do you think I should spend the $20 and replace it, or just dunk it in Kleen Flo and inspect it?
Thanks for any help.
Eric

You can get the jets at Greggs Suzuki at 1341 DUGALD RD. Was able to get all the jets for a 80 liquifire there. If they are cheap enough I would say go new.
As for which one, I also would use the ones recommended in the FTM, but someone will likely now better.

Great, thanks for the advice.
I got Gregs to press on new crank bearings for the last rebuild.

Dont know what to think of on the John Deere PIP specs, I tryed a 166 needle jet in my 79 trailfire 440 , & the jet was too short for the vm34. I had to order a 159?

jdcat,
I quoted your original post about this problem in the General section.

I found the same thing you did. When I pulled apart the factory carb it had a 159 in it.
I'm hoping a couple others who are taking apart TF 440 carbs this summer will post what needle jet they have. So far one other has found the same thing. I have one more TF carb to inspect. If our findings all match, we can get a post put in the FAQs explaining the situation.

I replaced all jets to JD specs on this carb, the Jet Needle 6F27-3 was hard to find so i matched it as close as possible with the 159 needle jet. Clean carb, rebuilt fuel pump. Still have to spray fuel in the carb to fire it up & spits out alota fuel from half throttle up. Also cant get the engine to idle, Acts like its running way to rich. Ive decided to install new seals, with a rebuild this summer. manitobatrailfires, When you get a chance to look at those carbs see if youve got an air jet in those. Mines threaded for a air jet, doesnt have one . On the JD parts site they list air jets for the 79 340,440 trailfire yet tech manual doesnt list them. Always wondered about that.
