Racing A Cyclone Tech Question
Racing A Cyclone Tech Question
I need to install a tether cord kill switch to my JD Cyclone. My sled has a KEC 340/22B motor. The problem is the tether is a normally closed circuit so it can not be spliced into the kill switch or key as they are normally open so when they close you ground out the ignition. I was told that the yellow and blue from the motor are magneto wires( one for ignition and one for lighting). So with the sled running I cut the yellow wire hoping to kill the ignition source, the sled kept running. So I cut the blue wire and the sled quit, problem sovled right. Thinking I've got it sorted out I reconnect the yellow and run the blue wire through the normally closed tether switch, I start the machine and test tether by pulling off the end and the sled continues to run. I'm sure many of you know the wiring system however I have attached the wiring diagram FYI. I am suppose to be racing this Sunday Apr 4 at Horseshoe Valley Resort.
Thank you in advance

Thanks Kenny
I have never had to install one before so I just assumed they all came that way when I bought mine. I have been calling around for normally open tether switch. I don't know where you are but there are alot of people behind parts counters that really don't have a clue. The most frustrating thing is calling a dealer and you get the question 'what machine is it for', I respond and you then you get 'oh ,,,,,,,,,we don't have that' And if they do have one they can't tell you if it's normally open/closed. I guess nobody can go the extra mile and get a continuity tester, my guess is that wouldn't even know how to use it. Well thats enough bitching, I feel better now. THANKS for the info

If you can't get your question answered on this board, then I would post on either the NH or Visca boards someone will know & probably be able to tell you what Mfg. & the part number that you need.
Kimpex shows both switches in there catalog..

As you found out, you can not use the switch you have. The wiring info that was given to you is only partially correct. The yellow wire is the low speed coil winding and the blue wire is the high speed coil wire. Both of these are part of the ignition circuit.pj85gixer wrote: I need to install a tether cord kill switch to my JD Cyclone. My sled has a KEC 340/22B motor. Try and find an original type switch such as this.

Matt your links did not work. Is DK's site having issues?
My experince with OEM Deere switches is that the current aftermarket caps do not work on them. The botton inside it too short to actuate the switch.
If you used a complete aftermarket NO switch/cap assy you will be fine.

The links still work for me, but in case they don't for others, the first part I posted wad DK# 2133 which is a PU switch, and the second one is #210438, "Gunnar" switch, which looks like a better quality. I have the PU one on my JDX8, and it can be a little finicky sometimes.

Link works now Matt.
I agree the PU switch probably is of low quality and made in China.

Racing A Cyclone Tech Question
Hi Guys
Thank you all for the info. I did find a N/O tether at a local dealer although a had to take in my own tester to confirm. It was a Mairer switch (not a cheap Chinese model). Easy to wire, I disconnected my kill switch in case I hit it by accident then wired the tether to the kill sw circiut. The race went well. I raced in Vintage Fan Open which is '84 and older. As you can well imagine I was out hp'ed by quite a few sleds some heavily moded. I placed 2nd in my qualifier and in the final I placed 5th out of 16 sleds, not bad for stock 340 that really wasn't running well ( timing issue I think). I am 41, my family and parents came out to watch. My father just rebuilt this motor as I had no time. He is semi retired and wanted the project. I raced yesterday and this morning I got a call from my father telling me what he wants to do to the sled to make better. So I will be on this site to get suggestion on tweeking this motor, carb and exhaust. When I bought this sled I was told it was 76 but I have told otherwise. This colour scheme was used only one year I believe. I have attached a pic of me and my ride in the staging line. Is there VIN list to identity the year?
Thanks again to everyone for keeping old girls going

Racing A Cyclone Tech Question
Pete,
You have a 78 cyclone. The serial number should start out as 80,0001 + . Maybe Rich (aka -take to the limit) will chime in a give you some pointers.
