78 Spitty motor mount bolts

Post by Miller Motorsports »

I have rode about 2 miles all season and it is over here but I still am wondering what the trick is for the left front motor mount bolt I cannot get the bolt back into the motor. I got the plugs out of the pan under the sled but that doesn't line up for that either. Do I have to pull the entire motor mount base off to get this done? The large plate under the motor that has four bolts holding it in? That seems like tons of work for one missing bolt!

As I recall, you would need to pull the engine to replace that bolt.....but pulling an engine from a Spitfire is very easy. It'll take way less time than changing the spark plugs on a 660 Turbo Cat.

ok I have all summer to get er' done now... I have been debating putting that 340 Kohler in my Riding Lawn mower chassis for giggles... All I use it for is pulling a yard trailer around my house but the Briggs and Strat has a rod thru the block now so it is scrap... I don't know what I am going to do with the spitty cause it is a lot of work to fix this one...

Well you will melt the motor down if you put it on the tractor and use it in weather over 35* degrees.

As long as the motor is jetted properly and has airflow, there should not be a burndown issue. Theres plenty of air cooled engines, both 2 and 4 stroke, that run all summer. Chainsaws, weed wackers, tractors, etc

Yeah well my idea is outside the rules for the local lawn tractor racers rule book I have to use parts directly off a production lawn tractor... I just found that the chasssis is cracked underneith below the step at the front across to the tunnel for the track. I can weld aluminum but that is going to be a serious stress point to weld without future cracks I think. I do not know what I am going to do with her yet the mount bolt and the crack and the sliders are toast so I do not know if it is worth the effort...

Can you explain why you think it would meltdown? Yes, I agree that if you don't have the air movement, or jet it too lean, there is an issue. But if you have air movement over the fins, jetted properly, there should be no issue.
My lawn tractor is an air cooled flat 4 Onan, I had a 79 CR250 dirt bike that was single cylinder, air cooled 2 stroke, ran like crazy. Yes, if you bogged in the mud too long, or let it sit and idle, it had issues, otherwise it was fun
