295/s q's

I finally got a chance to strip the 295/s all the way down today. Not a bolt left. I noticed a few things that are obviously different than the 00s and Xs. Were the tunnels stamped to accept bogies and slides? I have mounting holes for both suspensions, and both sets of holes at one time had something mounted in them. When I got it it had bogies in it, but upon cleaning all of the sh$% off of it I noticed that there are washer marks where a slide suspension was mounted at one time. It also has 2 plastic stud protectors and one aluminum one rivited to the underside of the tunnel. Most likely this sled had a slide suspension with a studded track at one time. There are a few quarter sized holes in the bulkhead where some studs had blown through. On the left side about 3 inches above where the snowflap cable was mounted there was another broken off bracket mounted. It was probably part of a flag kit. It had two flathead screws with nuts holding it on. There is also a big gaping hole on the right side running board partially concealed by the gripper pad. I peeled back the pad and it looks like someone cut it out with a grinder and than ran a drill all along the back side to make slots for something. Is this a remnant of a modification or just a large gaping hole waiting to be filled with new aluminum? Someone at some point had removed the subframe because the hardware is all mis-matched. This is the one that Ted Winter Ebayed that had the Polaris motor in it at one point. I don't see why the whole subframe would have had to be removed to modify the console post. The serial# is JDSOC 20888. I'm assuming that this one was not a racer, but if anyone has a history on it, it would be cool to learn it's story. All in all it's a good tunnel and hood to start with. I have everything 295/s for it except the airbox and small tank. Otherwise a green machine roller will provide me with the parts I need. I'm setting an achievable goal of having a painted tunnel and hood with decals by hadays time.

Sounds like my 295/S. Right now it has the older style steel bogies under it, but i think it was originally a slide rail suspension judging by the marks in the tunnel.

It sounds like there's no way to match the serial #s with the suspensions. I have enough aluminum bogies from what I got with the sled plus my personal stash to make a complete bogie suspension, but I'd like to restore the sled with it's original suspension option. I'm putting my money on the bogies because every carriage bolt I took out had a JD on it. That's hard to find on a JD that has had a suspension switch. That and the adjuster bracket holes in the tunnel are well worn like it has lived most of it's life with bogies.

The 295S tunnel was drilled for all three suspensions: bogie, slide, and bogie slide.

hi jack:
ive been told early 295/s had black and yellow stripe decal and late ones had solid yellow stripe. I picked up that sled in the junkyard at st. cloud mn. took out polaris motor and gave it a good powerwash was all i did with it.

So basically what I gather is that it is a later build 295/S. I'd assume Ted that you got it at Bristows. Most likely the hole is from a forklift or something of that nature then. I was just wondering about it because it looked like there might have been some method to the madness so to speak. All in all it's a great chassis to start from. The paint is real shiny under the front frame member and is a good candidate to use for matching. What is the deal with the extended bracket on the lower left corner of the console post? I noticed that the X's and 00's don't have it extending so far passed the corner it's welded to. I'm going to sandblast the chassis, and in the process I'll destroy the serial sticker. Are there any repops available? I'll have to restamp the date code because it looks like it was done with a scratch awl. The serial stampings are deep enough that I can rub them through the sticker.

Jack, If you can find a product called Klean Strip, Low Odor Aircraft Remover, product Number GAR777 www.kleanstripauto.com
Available from some auto parts dealers that works very good for stripping paint, just tape over the serial & other tags & don't get this stuff near them & you won't have to worry about the numbers..
Just brush it on & let set for a bit & wash the paint off, some areas have to be done a few times but this stuff works. Follow the directions & ware gloves..

Jack, Kenny's right but I'm still a blast fan. My blasting folks never lose me a decal or the serial number plate. They just cover it with thick coats of what looks like duct tape and I remove it before painting. DA

Attached is the decal I believe you want. I have had trouble getting someone to print it on the correct thin/aluminum foil type sticker. If you do find someone I would appreciate a few.

i believe i sent with you a aluminum handlebar support from a 600 that you will need to cut and weld onto the bottom of the original 295/S one where it was hacked to install the polaris motor.

Ted, I was thinking that maybe that extended gusset on the chaincase side was 295/s specific, but I noticed from some old pics that my JDX-6 had it as well. I'll give the stripper a run. The last time I used paint stripper, I bought the only stuff I could afford on a college kids budget. It was $12.95 a gallon if I remember correctly. I've already got my plate made to fix the hole in the running board. It's nice to have a dent-free chassis to work with. It took me a total of 15 hours to fix my sprintfire tunnel and front bumper. The bumper still isn't perfect, but it's close.
