Kohler Spitfire Recoil Pulley

Awhile back I mentioned a possible cross reference between a Kohler recoil pulley and a Tecumseh one. I wasn't 100% certain of the part number but now I am because I bought one on ebay and it has arrived and appears identical to a busted Spitfire one I had kicking around. The Tecumseh part number is 590486. I was searching for that cross reference thread that used to be on here, but I could not find it to post it there. I'm not sure how much this is going to help because I understand that Tecumseh went out of business in December of 2008, but there's bound to be some of these left in their parts pipeline.

You can still buy those new from Dennis Kirk. I bought one this last winter for my '78 Spitfire. Threw it in and away I went.

I actually have one made out of aluminum, I guess the owner before was tired of breaking the plastic one's and had one machined....worked ok, but honestlythe plastic one's seemed to still work better.

Perhaps the aftermarket ones are now made better than they used to be. I tried some several years ago and had repeat problems with the plastic tabs that held the spring in position breaking. I think the trick with the Kohler rewinds is to not wind the spring any more than necessary and also to not use a rope that is too thick.

Is there a source for the recoil springs? All the local distributors and wreckers tell me they are obsolete. I need one for my spitfire and for a kohler 340-2as (same).

The spring assembty is JD P/N AM34567.
I thought that the dealer said they were still available when I spoke to them last winter as they are used on the snowblowers. I know the whole recil was still available
