Installing seals
I was reading the service manual before I put the seals in my Liquifire. It says to lubricate the seals for ease of installation. It said not to use snowmobile oil but wasn't real clear on the proper oil to use. Any thoughts guys?

Pat, I have the SM2108, and it just said STP or equilivent. I wasn't exactly sure what they were refering to. Thanks.

Instead of buying a pint size can of STP, you can substitute gear oil. I think thats close enough and that is what I have used.

Got the PTO seal in. It was quite the battle to get the old seal out. Got the new one in. Ran it for a minute, and now I have a problem. . Took a look at the new seal and it trimmed a sliver of the rubber off the inside of the new seal.
So am I in need of another new seal?

You must have a burr or nick on the crankshaft and it is cutting the seal. I would replace that one to and inspect the crank carefully.

If there is a burr, can I use a bit of emery cloth to smooth it out a bit?

Remove the seal and inspect the crank. It is going to be very hard to get down in there to clean it up. You should make a protective ring of cardboard to cover the bearing before any grinding or filling and blow out any dirt before installation. If you have a Dremel tool with a fine grit wheel, that may be the best choice. Be careful, The crank has to remain in a perfect circle for the seal to work. The best repair method may be tear-down the engine and remove the crank.

I'm going to leave the sled alone until I get another seal. I don't want to leave to bearing exposed in case I get called away for work. They are looking for guys to work on a project up north. I might get told I am going, got to love Cross Lake .

The best way to determine crank condition is to remove the engine from the sled and tear it down.Im betting the crank is fine but you just nicked the seal some how trying to drive it in,also you can replace the mag side seal at the same time.

I had a good chat with Pat last night and have a game plan for redoing the seals. Including removing the engine so I can get a more direct swing, and I always planed to do the other side. Thanks for the help guys.
