I was wondering what that was.
Just wondering why.
Sure picked the right Deere to put one on!

Nice find!
Deere actually had a twist grip throttle kit for race sleds.... someone else would know more than I would....

I'm not sure why the fellow keeps rubbing everyone's nose in it on the VSCA site. He found a Dator, good for him, hopefullly it will be in a good home now.
Just my feelings about this subject.

No doubt the buyer is probably pretty stoked he found a Dator in a barn. I suggest bearing with it, since that is a very cool find, and it's easy to get carried away about.
Cledussnow77, and more pic's of this find you can share? And the guys are right, the twist grip throttle was a race update kit you could buy from Deere.
Again, nice find!

Re: Barn find in ohio
three cheers , you know some of us spend hours and hours searching , responding to ads stating only "john deere snowmobile" etc only for it to be a 79 trailfre with no hood and a blwn up motor for $1000.00 its really rewarding when you unearth something like this . just makes you want to dance !!! enjoy wade

Re: Barn find in ohio
I realize it's a very nice find, I would be really excited if I found one for sure. I'd like to hear more of the history & not so much of the "Look what I found, to bad for you."

Re: Barn find in ohio
First of all guys, I found this sled, but I am not the one who posted it on this site.I just put the pics out there to encourage you guys to keep up the good work. It was not my intention to rub anything in. I personally find it very interesting to see and hear about the process of saving a bit of JD history. This machine belonged to a former JD dealer from this area. They raced for the dealership back in the day.The fella that had it is now in his 80s,but sure was happy to know that it would be restored and preserved .I got it up and running, spiffed it up a little and took it back out to his house. When I fired it up and he sat down on that seat ,you could see the memories just pouring out of him. Now,that was the true reward.Sleds are a dime a dozen, but a moment like that is priceless.I would like to see more pics of how these old sleds are dicovered.More of a historical perspective of the process. That's just my preference.I've been doing this JD thing for years, but have stayed under the radar and have not been involved the organized part of the sport. Mostly because of the nonsense that I've been confronted with over this one lousy pic. Sorry about your aggravation. Tom

Re: Barn find in ohio
Hi Tom,
Nice job rescuing that Dator. Sounds like the former dealer was tickled pink you cleaned it and letting him hear it rev up again. I agree with you, its more the people and the memories than it is about sleds.
I did not see your add's over at VS/VSCA, but I can understand how encouragement can sound a lot like bragging. Try to see both sides of it, but I think you doing the right thing by letting guys know there are still barn finds like that. Really, you should start a thread in their BS section about what you found and what you then did with it. That is a great story. I would like to see more pic's of it here.
I appologize about any of the guys posting nonsense, but we are pretty passionate about our Dators. I am personally inviting you to share more about this story, like how you found out about it, etc.
Bottomsup, please be more sensative with your critism, we do not want to look clicky and mean. We want this page to be open to all Deere sled collectors, and for everyone with an interest in Deere sleds to feel welcomed.
Thank you,
-Joseph D. Rainville
