Tom
Don't think his name was Ron Johnson, was a young country looking guy, super nice and helpful

As to being restorable, after the antique tractors I've restored from little more than a serial number tag and transmission case, of COURSE these dators are restorable!

Always remember my number one guiding principle on restorations, there's nothing wrong with your new project that $10000 won't take care of! Money and time, the two tenets of restoration.

Put me down for 1 for sure also.

I have looked under every rock and cannot find one. I have found pipes and motors, but no air boxes or the exhaust silencer either.

Thanx Dave

Oh Tommmmmm...read this......

Well now I feel really old. Was down today in the warehouse pulling a tractor part to ship and ran across a few boxes with sled part #"s on them so I scribbled them down so I could see what they were when I got back up to the office. A few were cylinders, etc.

Here's the feeling old part, especially with what we've been talking about in this post. One of the parts turned out to be a new old stock Liquidator airbox. Man, I had completely forgotten about even having that but the timing couldn't be better. The one we were going to use as a pattern was decent enough I suppose but it doesn't get much better than using NOS parts for patterns for reproductions. Hopefully this will result in a perfect reproduction airbox now.

Wonder what else I have that I've forgotten about?

Greg

ps-We've had TWO snows already, both could have been sled riding time if you hurried. First was probably over two weeks ago, second was last week. Now it's in the 60's and 70's, possibly 80 on Sunday. Great winter so far (!!)

Hey Greg,
Sounds like a winner to me! Let me know how you are going to ship. You mentioned UPS,which can be tracked easily. Another consideration might be registered US postal.I believe, someone has to sign off each step of the way for added security. I'm not advocating one over the other. I just want it to be as secure as possible. We don't want to lose this thing. Are you sure you don't want to walk it here. If you start now you should get here by Feb.
As far as your 2 snows...I don't think we're gonna be far behind ya this year. This weather dropped in about the 1st of Oct. and it's beginning to "feel" a lot like Christmas. Chilly! :brrr:
Just finished a nice old 74' X8. Can't wait for a little snowstorm. Back in the day, we road these 8's from the Cooley Canal to Put-in-bay island on the ice. :sled: About 25 miles on Lake Erie. 18"-24" of ice. That would be fun to do again. Unfortunatly we don't seem to get that much ice anymore. Anyway...enough talkin the old days. I'll be waitin on the box. T :usa:

Hey Kenny
I checked and if you need a new old stock boot for a pattern for these airboxes I've got one.
What about the boot/grommet around the silencer tube? Is that available anywhere or not? I've got quite afew of those
new old stock but maybe those need to be made too?

Greg, If I remember right those were still used on the 80-84 Liquifires, Yup M66338 Dator, All Cyclone's, all 76-78 Liquifires, 80-84 Liquifires, 79 trailfire, ( I don't have anymore parts books to see what else used them )
I should have a rubber boot ( carbs to air box ) to get pricing with.
Somebody needs to work on the Air Box Tube..

Kenny
sounds good then. If the boots are the same and the air tube grommet

I'll take care of the air tube I think, my buddy has made other sled stuff for me and he's reasonable.

We'll have to get a count of some sort I guess.

Greg the Carb to air box boots are different, but the rubber ring that goes around the air tube are all the same.

Well that's what I thought but wiser heads than mine and all that

So I will stop thinking about the boots and grommets altogether and worry about the other stuff!

How are you guys doing on repoping the Dator Air Boxes? I have prints sent to 3 places so far for bids on making the Carb to Air Box Adapters or Boots, Carb as the parts book calls them.
I'll keep everyone posted..
