Montgomery Ward
A buddy of mine got a '70 Montgomery Ward 450 from his grandpa. This thing is beyond pristine. It is all original and has been stored in a barn since it was a year or 2 old. It was stored properly with no gas, and WD-40 on the rustable parts and under a good quality tarp. Everything on it is perfect except for one of the rear bogie springs. We're going to re-ring the engine and put fresh gaskets and new flex-pipe in. I'd like to find a nice pair of the rear bogie springs. The sled was made by Gilson so I'd assume that they're probably orange colored Gilsons. What springs interchange with these sleds? The JD springs interchange with Scorpions and some others so I'd assume that the Gilson/MW suspension also has a few other brands that use the same stuff. I need the very rear springs in the suspension. Any leads to what works or anybody willing to give up some springs would really help. I'd love to see him win best original this year in some shows because this is one of the only 40 year old sleds you'll see with no rust or even a scratch on it.

How about a picture of the rear axle.... and the whole sled.

Re: Montgomery Ward
The rear axle and adjustment systems are similar to most bogie suspension sleds. The rear springs are real thin and the long and short tabs are straight rather than the short tab being hooked like on the JDs. The suspension has the cluster style bogie setups. There is one set of 3 and one set of 2 wheels that utilize the same shaft. There are 3 clusters of these and than the rear axle. I hope the pics shed some light. If not, let me know. Note that the rear axle is unbolted and removed and that the part with the sprocket and spring on it is the adjuster. The axle then slides into the center of that bearing and attaches to the same setup on the other side. The track has pulled it forward into the first set of bogies.

Re: Montgomery Ward
Jack these look just like the bubble nose Trail-a-Sled springs. I bet you have some somewhere.
Nice condition for sure. Never seen one of those.

Interesting sled you've found there Jack. I know nothing about them, but like the straight handle bars...hold tight and keep your head down, especially with that drafty window

Re: Montgomery Ward
It helps to have saved old snowmobile parts books, The one I got all the numbers from says 1988 Sno-Stuff.
I just picked up a 1974 Wiseco catalog off E-bay, back then Wiseco seems to have sold way more than pistons.

Hey Kenny if you had a 75 Wiseco book maybe you could find some 340-S pistons.

Todd: We'll address those after I take care of the 295/S pistons. More to come about that soon I hope..

Re: Montgomery Ward
Geez Kenny, part #s and everything. Thanks. Now I have some leads to go on. This sled is interesting. It has the good old Kohler 440/2T with a 940 Salsbury and Tilly pumper. I don't plan to ride it being that it's not my sled and the ergos are really goofy. When you sit on it your knees come up above your elbows. I'm in awe every morning when I see an almost perfect 40 year old sled out in the shop.

Re: Montgomery Ward
Just wondering if you ever found any springs to fit this project? I have a montgomery ward 450 that I am just starting to work on. All of my springs in the rear suspension need to be replaced. Obviously you had the same trouble finding parts for this machine that I did. You are the first person that I've found that also has one of the machines. I have a friend with an old colt and I think that the springs will fit my bogies for that. Just curious what you used. Thanks alot
