80 liquifire carb choke valves

Hi,
Has anyone else had the choke valve in their carbs become "frozen" in the carb body? Working on a 80 Liquifire and both carbs have the choke valve frozen in place......they do come out right? Never came across this before.

Yes, they come out. I was working on an 80LF last spring with the same problem. One came out fine, the other stuck solid. I didn't have a lot of time to spend on it and ended up shelving the project before I could break it. I'd like to get it going for the Waconia show in Jan so if there is a trick to it I'd like to know as well.

Right now they are soaking in PB Blaster. I will post the results. They are in there rock solid.

It's hard to do without wrecking the plunger.You can try grabbing the ears that the cable ferrule seats in with a pliers and turning the plunger. Otherwise you will probably have to drill a hole and use an easy-out to break the plunger loose. Once you get it out, make sure to clean the choke bore well so that it doesn't happen again.

if your choke cable is still on it you might be able to do what I did.... I put brake fluid in the hole then used the adjusters to tighten the cable up all the way so it is fiddle string tight, then I used a propane torch to heat the carb round that area, it took quite a few times of adding more brake fluid and tightening the cable, then the cable popped out and I was able to use a flat head screwdriver in the slot of the plunger to turn it and work it out, did this with both of my carbs.

I thought about the torch but decided it would be the last resort. The plunger has a rubber center doesn't it? I was going for reusing them but that is looking pretty bleak at this point.

I wouldn't reuse them, even if they came out nicely, I always replace them if I don't know their history so I stay away from problems during the winter months. They are pretty cheap and can be bought many places online.

What I found that works is...

Pull hard until the cable come out. Now take a flat head screw driver and put it in the slot and rotate. ( you might be able to do this with the cable still in place)

Once loose you should be able to remove the plunger with a needle nose pliers without much effort.

(sorry i guess this what wycrumb was saying) I guess I never have used heat to get the cable out. A small screw driver can be used to bend the tabs of the plunger to the sides to get the cable out as well.

It's funny this topic came up. I'm dealing with a pair of Mikunis that both the choke plunger and the throttle valve are stuck on. Lots of good ideas here I'm sure something mentioned will work.

I had this problem when I had my 80 Liquifire. I tried soaking, tapping into them, but they were just STUCK. Eventually I had to drill them out as a last resort. I do not recommend drilling them as you risk damaging the carb, but I had no choice. Luckily I did not ruin the carb and got them out. On my 83 they were stuck but after soaking them they came out. Good luck!

Just a quick update. PB Blaster did the trick.....soaked for a week and one quick jerk of the choke cable, out they came. Replaced with new as per suggestion. Patience, patience, patience.

If the choke valve bore in the carb is real nasty I would maybe have the choke bore bead blasted out. I did a 81 LF where they were stuck very badly. The valves came out but the bore was very scored up but blasting them did the trick!
