So from what I have read the 72's have a 25mm crankshaft output diameter and 73' and up has 30mm. Where do I get crankseals for it? Most of my part sources show all the 100 series JD's using same seals.
Thanks
Andy

Re: 72' 400 Crankseals?
Andy,
It should use the same seals as the '73. The 25mm is the taper at the end of the crankshaft where the clutch rides. The taper was changed from 25mm in '72 to 30mm in '73 but the O.D. of the crank where the seal rides should be the same.

The seals are different for the 72' models in case anyone is resealing a case however the Winderosa gasket kit comes with 2 small seals so you should be set.

I resealed my 73 400 last year with a winderosa set. It came with one 30mm seal and one 25mm seal. i got another 30 mm from local bearing shop. your kit should come with the right stuff for a 72 because it was wrong for my 73.

Re: 72' 400 Crankseals?
Just a thought? Finding a Wenderosa Set of outer seals is great, but what do you guys do for the center seals, If the outer ones are bad why wouldn't your engines center ones be bad or brittle also??

Re: 72' 400 Crankseals?
Seams to me that probably 80% of the eninges I have torn down had one or both outside seals bad.
But maybe only 20% had a bad center seal(s).
There may be several reasons for this that may include the fact the the inside ones do not get the ozone exposure, tend to be more lubricated, becasue of a better seal type or are not subject to radial load thet the PTO one is. Seams the PTO seal is bad 75% of the time when there is a seal issue.
I put new seals in a 74 JD 300 Kohler this afternoon that had no problems with the internals.

Re: 72' 400 Crankseals?
Well Todd I think we can rule out the oiling as both sides would get the same oiling, except maybe a PTO side that would have two bearings?? And the same would go for seals as all the old CCW/Kioritz OEM seals on a particular crank would have probably came from the same MFG..
So that leaves use with ozone exposure & maybe that is why the PTO ones would go faster than the mag side?? OR being thrust or flex on the PTO side is greater??
I'm sorry, but with the JD parts flowing down to a trickle I just can't see doing 1/2 a job.. to me would be like just replacing the rusted outside bearings??
I guess it make the remaining Deere parts out there more valuable??
I guess doing a 1/2 a job on something has jumped up & bit me too many times over the years??

Re: 72' 400 Crankseals?
I have found many bad cranks over the years with either bearing or centerseals issues.
As a donor crank is sometimes available I have used several on engines I have rebuilt.
The way I see it if the cost of a rebuilt crank is $300 and I can get a good used one for $50 I use the latter.
But if a guy is working on a rare powerplant like you are doing than the full rebuild is the best option I agree.

An interesting note on this Kohler 300 was that the PTO still had the original seal on it but the MAG had been replaced.
I also put in a new O-ring on the fan housing.
