AC 600 Spark problem

Post by JDT »

A friend ask me the help him fix his 98 Arctic Cat Powder Special 600. It ran last spring when he sheaded it and now has no spark.
It uses a NO ignition system so we unplugged the harness at the engine to eliminate the kill switch, key switch, throttle safety, carb sensors and still no spark.

External coil tests good. Grounds on the stator and CDI are good.

My question is what should I read on the two trigger connections and the four wire connector that goes to the CDI.

By the way, the lighting coil works the lights when the rope is pulled so I know that the magnito is ok.

Any input would be helpful or a online site with diagnostics for a machine this new.

Todd, I'm not so sure you can unplug it at the engine anymore like you could on the older sleds you might have to eliminate one thing at a time, & then look out that some of the switches aren't an open/closed loop.
I would check the carbs sensors & then the throttle switch.. ( that could be a throttle positioning sensor )?? also I think that is a sensor on the air box also.. Some of those Cats have the control module in the air box..

The few early 90s A/Cs I've worked on required you to complete the circuit to run. disconnecting it isn't enough but you need to jump the wires together. :sled:

There is a sticker on the airbox that reads "The ignition system on this machine is the normally open type".

Just for poops and laughs I did test the kill/safety loop and all that works. Even will it all plugged in it still has no spark.

This is not an EFI model.

Is there any website that has Cat service manuals that can be read?

Todd,

This online manual is for an 01, but one would assume they are similar? It has everything you should need except the chapter you really need, the engine electrical chapter. Apparently, that is a supplemental manual for that. Maybe you will be able to find something useful in it.

This one is good from 90 to 98. Should have everything you need this time. You have to download it. It is 500 pages so it takes a little while. When you open it up, you will be asked for a password. The pasword is sled. Hope this helps

Pull out all 3 carb slides. There will be a magnet in them that has to line up with sensor on the outside of the carb body. Check to make sure that all 3 magnets are sitting in their reliefs. The other thing to look for is on the throttle lever. There are 2 clear spacers that must be in good shape and provide no slop for the throttle lever. If you're riding a newer Cat and the engine keeps cutting out, replace the 2 clear plastic spacers, and most likely the problem will go away. There really aren't any common electrical issues associated with the ZRT motors. Make sure that your pickup coil (Trigger Coil) ohms out good as well. It should be around .8 ohms. My money is on the throttle safety system acting up. They are a pain in the butt. There is a way to bypass the whole safety system, and even a Cat part that will plug into your wire harness, but I wouldn't recommend deleting a safety system.

Jack this is a 600 twin if that makes any difference. I understand the Cat throttle safety system. And I know about the plastic washers.
However there is that stricker on the air box that says NO. I have to assume that the sticker is there to remind mechanics that this sled is different from most Cats in that era as Cat changed from NO to NC back in 79.
The emergency bypass connector is missing from this toolkit which makes since as this is a NO system. A guy needs that plugin with a NC sled or you will have a long walk home.
It appears that the trigger is universal from 1992-2007. I am thinking CDI failure at this point but i have not looked over the guide that Dustin supplied yet.
I did note a second set of wires on the side of the two carbs. One pair is the saftey switches but what is the second set for?
Some type of preheater?
Thanks for your input.
